Summary
The position of Welder/Fitter includes, but is not limited to production welding, service & repair welding, prototype building, fitter welding, fabricating, positioning, aligning and fitting parts of structural products. Responsibilities will include the fabrication of custom prototypes from supplied drawings, fabrication of custom jigs and fixtures to produce production parts that meet customer specifications as well as the fabrication of metal structures using jigs and fixtures in a high-paced production environment.
The use of various hand tools, machinery and equipment will be required to manufacture metal products. This position will work with Supervisors and Lead Hands to ensure continuous improvements in work, welding according to pre-set parameters using MIG, ARC and TIG welding processes. The ability to scan in and out of work orders is a must. The Welder/Fitter will be required to assist the Design Department with insight and knowledge of superior manufacturing methods, perform random maintenance on returned products to be refurbished or re-worked to customer specifications, and have strong knowledge and skill in operating all metalworking machinery. Additionally, the Welder/Fitter will be required to read and understand production drawings, blueprints, work orders and other written instructions.

Job Duties
- Review engineering drawings, blueprints, or welding process specification and work orders to determine materials requirements and task determination.
- Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments using processes such as gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), plasma arc welding (PAW), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), oxy-acetylene welding (OAW).
- Operate manual or semi-automatic flame-cutting equipment
- Operate brazing and soldering equipment
- Operate metal shaping machines such as brakes, shears and other metal straightening and bending machines
- Repair parts of metal products by welding on extra layers.
- Maintain safe work practices
- Assist in development of repair estimates
- Conduct technical inspections
- Conduct repairs, modifications and retrofits
- Liaise with internal and external customers for resolution of data and technical problems
- Monitor parts usage and report on any material issues
- Prepare input for various management and log reports
- Provide data to assist in monitoring and tracking project budgets and project status
- Assist in training, directing & supervision of junior employees and apprentices, inspecting and certifying their work
- Conducts project review and planning
- Reviews blueprints and specifications; ensures drawings and specifications will function as designed in environment intended for use
- Schedules critical and non-critical activities effectively for project success
- Develop goals and priorities
- Ensures accuracy and completion of assigned tasks and projects
- Keep detailed and accurate reports and documentation
- Maintain a working knowledge of changes in technology, compliance and repair techniques
- Compare dimensions or assembly to blueprint specifications.
- Set up and operate fabrication machines and iron working equipment.
- Fits and assembles structural frameworks and housings for materials.
- Lays out parts dimensions on worktable, using square, chalk line and soapstone.
- Mark reference points onto floors or face blocks and transpose them to workpieces using measuring devices, squares, chalk and soapstone.
- Position, align, and tack parts to form complete units or subunits, following blueprints and layout specifications using jigs, welding equipment and hand tools.
- Cut bevels using portable grinders and cutting torches.
- Perform and direct others to tack-weld fitted parts together and reinforce weldments to control distortion.
- Lift materials or workpieces using cranes or other lifting equipment.
- Comply with safety regulations and maintain clean and orderly work areas.
- Perform all other duties as assigned or needed.
- Attend meetings as required.
- Initiate safety concerns and make judgments on the best methods of completing tasks.

Requirements
- High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.
- 5 years' experience as a Journeyman Welder
- Interprovincial Red Seal
- Valid welding certification, flux-cored arc welding (FCAW)
- Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) ticket and fabrication experience an asset.
- Possess a valid driver's license.
- Must provide trade related tools.
- Ability to work independently in a busy environment.
- Experience with routine maintenance operations.
- Highly flexible, with solid interpersonal skills that allow one to work effectively in a diverse working environment.
- Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
- Able to work well under pressure.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Able to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times.
- Safe and proficient use of power and hand-operated tools and shop equipment.
- Computer literate.
Work Conditions
- 24/7 availability may be required
- Physical ability to lift to 50lb
- Travel to off-site locations may be required
- Safety equipment will be required, e.g. steel-toed safety boots, safety glasses/goggles, etc.
