Our Laboratory Services Department uses state of the art equipment, technology and processes to collect and test clinical specimens in order to obtain information about the health of our patients so that our inter-professional teams can diagnose, treat and prevent disease.
Our Clinical Practice Leader, Laboratory supervises and monitors departmental daily operations in partnership with Laboratory Management and the Clinical Practice Leaders (CPLs), and evaluates and addresses training gaps in laboratory processes, equipment uses, and practices

Program Director, Laboratory Services
Position Responsibilities Include But Not Limited To
- Supervise daily operations of departmental staff and systems; monitor performance trends and address issues; refer complex or persistent matters to Manager for resolution
- Liaise with organizational leadership, Clinical Practice Leaders, and nursing staff to address daily operational requirements
- Working with all colleges or universities with regards to laboratory clinical placement and scheduling
- Evaluate technical competency and performance in laboratory procedures and practices for department staff and Point of Care Testing programs (e.g. lab automation, glucose meters, pneumatic tube systems) to improve procedural adherence
- Develop interdisciplinary staff competency program (e.g. orientation, training) for department staff and Point of Care Testing programs
- Develop and evaluate training delivery (e.g. efficacy, return on investment); recommend strategies to address training and practice gaps, and issues with automation; develop content, documentation, training delivery logistics
- Develop and maintain lab services in response to changing customer needs
- Provide subject matter expertise and leadership in lab policy and process improvements in collaboration with physicians and clinical teams; evaluate, recommend, document, update, and implement improved diagnostic procedures using patient focused approaches
- Provide information and support for procurement processes
- Provide input into annual operating budget development, and fiscal and human resource planning processes
- Coach and mentor Laboratory staff; also holding huddles
- Lead the development, evaluation, and ongoing improvement of policies, models and standards of care, and clinical services for the assessment and management of patients utilizing laboratory diagnostic procedures aligned with laboratory care standards and best practice guidelines in collaboration with clinical teams
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop partnerships and strategies to manage change and address gaps in patient care delivery
- Provide subject matter expertise as a resource to health care team members across clinical programs
- Co-chair of the Laboratory Quality Committee to lead quality improvement initiatives; evaluate the ability of initiatives to meet identified goals and objectives
- Participate in the investigation (incident report), corrective action and follow up for discordant results
- Participate in health and safety committee and ensure safety practices are carried out in the lab
- Lead and direct the implementation of QBP improvement initiatives
- Develop standardized quality care chart review template in collaboration with DSS to understand performance and patient outcomes
- Conduct laboratory diagnostics service delivery needs assessment and gap analysis to develop plans to improve clinical and non-clinical patient outcomes
- Report on quality measures (e.g. staff attendance to training, adoption rates, quality of training)
- Monitor and address compliance issues with Lab policies and procedures in collaboration with Managers, Clinical Biochemist, and Microbiologist; escalate complex or persistent issues to Manager for resolution
Qualifications
- Registered and in good standing with College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) required
- Medical Laboratory Technology diploma, Undergraduate Degree in Health Sciences or a Baccalaureate Degree and/or Diploma in associated technologist related discipline is required.
- Master's in Health Science, or related field required. Candidates who are actively pursuing their Master's will be considered
- 5 years of experience as a Medical Lab Technologist in a Hospital Environment
- 3 years supervisory or leadership experience
- Strong Analytical skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Knowledge in principles of adult education
- Excellent attendance and discipline free record required.
