Thorburn NS, Canada YMCA of Greater HalifaxDartmouth Full time

Title: Media, Arts & Creative Specialist

Location: Big Cove Camp, Thorburn, NS

Position Status: Full-Time, Temporary

Start Date: June 2026

Compensation: $650+ per week

There is potential inside all of us – we all have it in us to shine.

Every charity exists to help solve a problem – our charity exists to help solve many problems, from childcare shortages, social isolation, mental health issues, access to wellness, and more. Today, our network is spread across 100+ program locations in HRM and the province, meeting the most urgent needs of our communities in mental health supports, accessible childcare, supporting an increasing immigrant population, safe spaces for youth to grow and lead, helping to navigate a precarious labour market, delivering wellness programming for all, and creating community for isolated older adults.

We give people the tools, encouragement, and safe space to discover their inner strength. When they know someone's in their corner, with unconditional support, they realize they can do more than they thought possible. It's your support, expertise, and guidance that helps people ignite their full potential and shape our neighborhoods into vibrant and healthy communities.

With us at their side, they can Shine On.

About the role:

The Media, Arts & Creative Specialist (A&C Specialist) plays a key dual role at Big Cove YMCA Camp: delivering high-quality creative programming in Arts & Crafts and Drama, while also managing photography, media organization, and social media communication to keep families engaged and connected.

The A&C Specialist provides leadership to Arts & Crafts and Drama staff, ensures creative program spaces are welcoming and well maintained, and captures daily camp life through thoughtful, high-quality media. This role is central to both camper experience and parent communication throughout the summer.

In this role, you will:

Creative Program Leadership

  • Oversee all Arts & Crafts and Drama programming, ensuring activities are engaging, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate.
  • Support, supervise, and mentor creative program staff.
  • Develop, plan, and implement arts, crafts, and drama activities aligned with camp values and age group needs.
  • Ensure program spaces are safe, organized, clean, and fully stocked.
  • Lead or assist with camp-wide performances, creative showcases, or special events.

Media & Photography

  • Serve as the primary camp photographer, capturing daily life, programs, staff, and special events.
  • Edit, curate, and organize photos for weekly uploads and internal use.
  • Take weekly cabin photos, ensuring they are labeled and delivered accurately.
  • Maintain an organized digital media library.
  • Lead a media-focused interest group, teaching photography and creative digital skills to campers.

Social Media & Parent Communication

  • Create consistent weekly posts for Facebook and Instagram that reflect camp values and highlight camper experiences.
  • Work with the Admin Coordinator and Camp Director to ensure messaging aligns with YMCA standards.
  • Uphold privacy, consent, and safety standards in all media content.

Collaboration & Camp Support

  • Work with program staff to capture meaningful content across various activities.
  • Support other program areas when creative and media duties allow.
  • Participate as a member of the resource team and contribute to overall camp culture and operations.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist with kitchen duties, including dishes and meal cleanup.
  • Support facility maintenance, including cleaning shared spaces and program areas.
  • Participate in groundskeeping, such as outdoor tidying and basic upkeep.
  • Assist with trail and campsite maintenance to ensure safe and accessible program spaces.

Education and skills qualifications:

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be 19 years of age by December 31, 2026
  • At least three years of experience in a summer camp or related environment.
  • Bronze Cross certification.
  • Standard (Intermediate) First Aid & CPR-C.
  • WHIMIS certification.

Recommended / Assets

  • National Lifeguard (NLS).
  • Class 4 Driver's License.
  • Canadian Boating License.
  • Experience with photo editing software (e.g., Lightroom, Photoshop).
  • Background in visual arts, drama, photography, digital media, or youth arts programming.
  • Experience with social media content creation and digital storytelling.

Key Competencies

  • Strong creative skills and passion for youth arts programming.
  • Photography and media management expertise, including editing and digital organization.
  • Excellent communication skills, including representing the camp to families and the public.
  • Leadership and supervision abilities.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced outdoor environment with competing priorities.
