Position Summary:

The Instructor for Film, Television, and Special Effects Makeup is responsible for delivering engaging, industry-relevant instruction to students pursuing careers in film, television, and media production makeup. This role requires a working knowledge of set etiquette, production processes, and advanced technical makeup skills, with an emphasis on both creative artistry and professional standards practiced on film and television sets.

The successful candidate will inspire students through practical demonstrations, theoretical instruction, and mentorship — preparing them for real-world success in professional makeup departments across media industries.

Instructional Delivery

  • Teach and assess all areas of the Film, Television, and Special Effects Makeup curriculum, including theory and hands-on application.
  • Deliver lessons that align with program outcomes, focusing on the following areas:

  • Understanding production stages, job roles, and professionalism within film and television environments.

  • Knowledge of key terminology, camera work, and shot abbreviations used on set.
  • Script and character breakdown analysis for designing and executing makeup looks suited to production needs.
  • Historical and decade makeup design (1920s–present), exploring influential figures, products, and events shaping makeup trends.
  • Out-of-kit special effects techniques, including frostbite, bruising, small injuries, casualty simulation, and exposure effects.
  • Application of bald caps, natural and corrective makeup, aging and breakdown effects, and realistic tattoo design.
  • Prosthetic integration techniques — including appliance application, blending, removal, and post-removal skincare.

Curriculum and Assessment

  • Develop and update lesson plans, demonstrations, and assessments in alignment with institutional standards and current industry practices.
  • Evaluate student progress and provide constructive feedback that promotes professional and artistic growth.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and performance evaluations

Student Engagement and Mentorship

  • Support a positive and inclusive learning environment that fosters creativity, collaboration, and professional readiness.
  • Advise and mentor students regarding industry expectations, portfolio development, and career pathways.
  • Encourage discipline, punctuality, and professionalism reflective of on-set standards.

Industry and Institutional Collaboration

  • Stay informed on emerging trends, materials, and technologies in film, television, and special effects makeup.
  • Contribute to curriculum reviews and program development initiatives.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, events, and professional development sessions as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience

  • Diploma or degree in Makeup Artistry, Special Effects Makeup, or a related field (Film, Theatre, or Fine Arts preferred).
  • Minimum 3–5 years of professional experience in film, television, or media production makeup departments.
  • Prior teaching or instructional experience at the postsecondary or professional training level is an asset.

Skills & Competencies

  • Expert knowledge of makeup techniques for film and television, including prosthetics and out-of-kit special effects.
  • Strong understanding of on-set procedures, health and safety, and collaboration within production teams.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and guide students.
  • Commitment to maintaining professional standards and fostering industry readiness among learners.

Working Conditions

  • On-campus instruction at the College of Makeup Arts and Design (CMU&D).
  • Combination of classroom teaching, practical lab supervision, and student evaluations.
  • May include occasional evening or weekend sessions based on production simulations or workshops.
