Santec Canada is looking to add an Optical Designer to our R&D team Working with new technology, the purpose of this position is to design and test new and existing optical components for Santec products. The Optical Designer is responsible for designing and testing any internal systems that involve fiber-based or free-space optics. The Optical Designer will work closely with the mechanical design team to iterate through designs which are both functional and manufacturable.

Responsibilities
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and firmware engineers to develop next-generation optical instruments and subsystems.
- Design, simulate, and optimize optical systems for new product concepts and prototypes.
- Analyze optical performance through modeling, simulation, and experimental validation.
- Plan and execute laboratory experiments to characterize optical components and assemblies.
- Interpret measurement data to refine optical designs and guide design iterations.
- Investigate new optical technologies, materials, and architectures to expand design capability.
- Review relevant patents and literature to inform design direction
- Document design work, test results, and experimental findings in a structured and reproducible way.
- Support prototype builds and provide optical insight during system integration and debugging.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of R&D optical design and measurement practices.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned
Position Requirements
- Master's degree or PhD in Optics, Physics, Physics Engineering, or a closely related field.
- 1–3 years of research or industry experience in optical system design, modeling, or prototyping.
- Strong foundation in optical theory, imaging, and signal analysis.
- Proficiency with optical design tools (e.g., Zemax, CODE V, or equivalent).
- Experience with data analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python, or similar).
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills in English
- Collaborative mindset with the ability to work across multidisciplinary R&D teams.
- Experience in microscopy, imaging systems, or laser optics is an asset.
- Laser Safety Certification is an asset.
- Basic programming skills as well as an understanding of the technical requirements for ISO certification would be considered assets.
