About JEM Strapping Systems
JEM Strapping Systems is Canada's only manufacturer of steel strapping and is 100% Canadian owned and operated. We operate a heavy industrial manufacturing facility serving customers across construction, steel, logistics, forestry, and industrial markets throughout Canada and the United States.
As part of our continued investment in manufacturing capability—including steel strapping production, slitting, forming, and heat-treatment-related equipment—we are seeking an experienced Production Shift Supervisor with experince as a Millwright.
Position Overview
This is a hands-on leadership role combining shift supervision and millwright-level mechanical ownership. The successful candidate will run the assigned shift to hit safety, throughput, quality, and scrap targets, while also acting as the first-line mechanical responder—troubleshooting, repairing, and stabilizing equipment to maximize uptime.
This role is designed for a plant that cannot afford downtime: you will be the shift's operational leader and the shift's mechanical anchor.
This role is responsible for 6–7 production employees (operators/helpers/material handling as assigned)
Key Responsibilities
A. Shift Leadership & Production Execution (Supervisor Accountabilities)
· Lead and supervise 6–7 direct reports; assign tasks and set clear expectations for safety, output, and quality.
· Execute the daily production plan: crew setup, job changeovers, and adherence to work instructions.
· Monitor shift KPIs in real time (throughput, downtime, scrap/rework, safety compliance) and intervene early.
· Ensure strict compliance with all Health & Safety procedures, including safe work practices, housekeeping/5S, and incident prevention.
· Conduct shift start huddles and end-of-shift handoffs: communicate events, downtime reasons, issues open/closed, and next-step mitigation.
· Train and onboard new employees; coach performance; reinforce standard work and accountability.
· Manage rework and scrap: isolate material, determine root cause category (equipment/process/material), and ensure corrective actions are captured.
· Maintain production documentation: shift reports, downtime logs, "good catches," and any required boards/checklists used on the floor.
B. Millwright / Maintenance Execution (Hands-On Mechanical Ownership)
· Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and improve steel processing / strapping equipment, including:
o Slitting and material handling systems
o Forming / tensioning equipment
o Conveyors, drives, gearboxes, bearings, couplings
o Hydraulics and pneumatics
· Respond to breakdowns with urgency and discipline; restore safe operation and document root cause.
· Perform scheduled preventive maintenance tasks during the shift as required; ensure lubrication, alignment, and inspection routines are followed.
· Identify recurring failures and recommend permanent fixes (mechanical upgrades, PM changes, operator training needs).
· Support installation, modification, and commissioning of equipment changes or improvements.
· Coordinate with electricians/external service providers when issues cross into electrical/controls domain.
· Enforce lockout/tagout and safe isolation for all maintenance work.
· Perform basic electrical troubleshooting related to motors, sensors, switches, and controls
· Work safely around electrical panels and powered equipment
· Coordinate with electricians or external service providers when required
C. Materials / Flow / Housekeeping (Operational Stability)
· Ensure work area is kept clean, safe, and organized (5S).
· Escalate material quality issues immediately; ensure proper receiving hold / red-flagging and documentation when defects are found.
· Work with production planning/materials to prevent line starvation and avoidable changeover delays.
D. Installation & Continuous Improvement
· Support installation, modification, and commissioning of new or upgraded equipment
· Read and interpret mechanical drawings, layouts, and schematics
· Assist with equipment alignment, setup, and foundation preparation
· Recommend equipment improvements or modifications to enhance reliability and efficiency
E. Safety & Operations Support
· Follow lockout/tagout and all plant safety procedures
· Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
· Communicate clearly with operations and management regarding equipment condition and repair status
· Operation of cranes, forklifts, and jacks is considered an asset but is not mandatory
