Job Summary
The Mechanic Apprentice supports the maintenance, repair, and inspection of trucks, trailers, and support vehicles used in civil construction operations. Working under the guidance of Journeyperson Mechanics, the apprentice develops technical skills across mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems while progressing through all apprenticeship levels toward Journeyperson certification. This role plays a key part in maintaining fleet reliability, safety, and minimizing equipment downtime while building the competencies required of a certified mechanic.
Job Duties
Maintenance & Repairs
- Assist with routine maintenance and repairs on trucks, trailers, and support vehicles used in civil construction.
- Support diagnosis of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues under supervision, increasing independence as skills develop.
- Perform assigned preventive maintenance tasks according to schedules and manufacturer specifications.
- Assist with field repairs or service calls as required to support operations and reduce equipment downtime.
- Accurately document work performed and learning tasks completed.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all company, site, and industry safety procedures at all times.
- Use tools, equipment, and PPE properly, maintaining a clean and organized work area.
- Ensure all work meets regulatory requirements and manufacturer standards, with oversight as required.
- Immediately report hazards, near misses, incidents, or unsafe conditions.
Tools, Parts & Inventory Support
- Use shop tools, diagnostic equipment, and technology appropriately and safely under guidance.
- Assist with identifying required parts and supplies and notify the Shop Manager as needed.
- Help maintain shop tools and equipment in safe, serviceable condition.
Communication & Coordination
- Work closely with the Journeyperson Mechanics and Shop Manager to prioritize work.
- Communicate progress, challenges, and learning needs clearly and professionally.
- Collaborate with drivers and equipment operators to understand and relay reported issues.
Quality & Reliability
- Complete assigned tasks to a high standard of quality, consistent with apprentice level and training.
- Assist with testing and verification of repairs before equipment is returned to service.
- Learn to identify recurring or potential issues and escalate them appropriately.
Learning & Development
- Actively participate in on-the-job training and formal apprenticeship schooling.
- Demonstrate steady progression in technical skills, independence, and responsibility.
- Apply feedback and coaching from Journeypersons and supervisors.
- Build knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and construction equipment over time.
Requirements
- Registered or eligible to register as a Truck and Transport Mechanic Apprentice or Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Apprentice.
- Applicable apprentice level (1st through 4th year), depending on experience.
- Previous mechanical, shop, or equipment experience considered an asset.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn diesel, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
- Ability to work safely in a shop and field-based construction environment.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and positive attitude toward learning.
- Ability to follow instructions, ask questions, and work effectively as part of a team.
- Valid driver's license; Class 1 license considered an asset or willingness to obtain.
- Commitment to completing apprenticeship training and progressing toward Journeyperson certification.
Hours
- 8 hours a day
- 40 hours a week
- OT as required
