Role Description
Marinus Services ULC is seeking a full-time, on-site Desktop Support Specialist to provide technical support for both internal users and global clients. This role is based in our Halifax office and involves a mix of remote and hands-on troubleshooting.
You will support hardware, software, and network systems; deliver prompt technical assistance; and participate in implementing new technology initiatives in collaboration with our global IT teams. The Desktop Support Specialist will report to the General Manager and work directly with the ITSLB Head of Information Systems on projects and support coordination.
This is a hands-on, customer-facing role that requires a proactive approach to troubleshooting, strong communication skills, and a commitment to delivering high-quality support.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Support:
Provide direct support to internal staff and external clients, both remotely and in person, for a wide range of hardware and software issues. - Troubleshooting:
Diagnose and resolve problems related to computers, phones, printers, copier systems, software, and network connectivity. - Installation & Configuration:
Install, configure, and upgrade computer hardware, software, and peripherals in a structured and efficient manner. - User Training:
Assist users by educating them on best practices and resolving frequently encountered issues. - Documentation:
Maintain accurate records of support requests, solutions provided, system configurations, and support processes. - System Maintenance:
Perform routine system maintenance such as backups, updates, patching, and security checks. - Collaboration:
Work closely with other IT team members to support the seamless implementation and integration of new technologies. - Team Contribution:
Demonstrate flexibility and teamwork in supporting users and internal projects. - Knowledge Transfer:
Share knowledge and processes to help onboard and train new team members effectively.
Qualifications
- Education:
Minimum of a degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a directly related field. A Bachelor's degree is preferred. - Experience:
1-2 years in a technical support or desktop support role. - Certifications:
Relevant certifications such as CompTIA A+, Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP), or Apple Certified Support Professional (ACSP) are preferred. - Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in operating systems (Windows and Linux)
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 and general office software
- Strong troubleshooting skills for both hardware and network issues
- Soft Skills:
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong customer service orientation
- Proven problem-solving ability
- Ability to manage work across multiple projects
Preferred Skills
- Experience with Active Directory and remote desktop tools
- Familiarity with collaboration and cloud-based software
- Proficiency in end-user email setup, group assignments, password resets, and phone support
- In depth understanding of IT Service Management frameworks such as ITIL and experience with service desk ticketing systems
- Awareness of cybersecurity best practices in a support environment
Work Environment
- This position is based on-site only, in Halifax, Nova Scotia
- There will be regular interaction with distributed IT teams and stakeholders
- Some flexibility may be required for cross-time zone collaboration
- Ability to adapt to fast-paced and evolving technical support needs
Physical Demands
- Ability to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and nights, as necessary
- Ability to sit for extended periods
- Ability to bend, reach, pull, push, and lift up to 45 pounds
- Verbal and hearing abilities sufficient to understand English and work safely
