Victoria, British Columbia, Canada BC Ferries Full time $105,200 - $131,500 per year

Job Description

SENIOR OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY & HEALTH ADVISOR

Victoria or Vancouver Mainland

The Opportunity

BC Ferries is undertaking a historic wave of capital projects to modernize terminals, enhance traveller experience, and support the future of marine transportation in British Columbia. To ensure world-class safety outcomes as we deliver these critical infrastructure upgrades, we're seeking a Senior Occupational Safety & Health Advisor to join our team.

As project workloads grow, ensuring robust safety oversight is critical. This role will play a key part in maintaining compliance, preventing incidents, and supporting the safe and timely delivery of construction projects. If you're a construction safety expert who thrives in dynamic, high-impact environments—and you want your work to directly shape safer communities and safer workplaces—this is an opportunity to make your mark.

The Role

This role reports  directly to the Manager, Occupational Safety & Health, however, day-to-day work activities will be directed by senior leaders at Terminal Project Management Office and Fleet Renewal.

You add value and are energized by key areas of oversight such as:

  • Partnering with project managers to integrate safety requirements into project planning, design and execution;
  • Interpreting and applying internal safety policies, systems, and standards to construction projects;
  • Leading project risk and hazard assessments to identify safety hazards, and develop strategies to mitigate risks;
  • Interpreting WorkSafeBC regulations to assess the suitability of delegating prime contractor responsibilities on select projects. Where delegation of prime is not appropriate, serve as the internal health and safety coordinator;
  • Developing, implementing, reviewing and communicating project specific safety plans for project teams and contractors;
  • Reviewing contractor safety programs and monitor compliance with contractual obligations and all applicable safety requirements;
  • Conducting safety orientations, leading safety meetings and communicating to align contractors with project safety goals;
  • Building collaborative relationships with contractors, consultants, and internal stakeholders to promote a proactive safety culture;
  • Performing site inspections and audits to ensure adherence to legislation, company policies and project safety requirements;
  • Supporting the investigation and reporting of safety incidents, and develop strategies to prevent recurrence;
  • Promoting safety culture and ensure that all employees receive appropriate safety training and education;
  • Supporting updates to policy, process, and practices related to construction safety and contractor safety management;
  • Stay current with changes to legislation, industry best practices, and emerging safety technologies;
  • Engaging with a range of internal and external stakeholders, including employees, unions, regulatory agencies, and industry associations to promote a culture of safety and ensure the BC Ferries safety programs are aligned with industry best practice;
  • Frequent travel to terminals up and down the BC Coast and working outdoors in all environmental conditions;

What you bring to the team

  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Diploma and/or Certificate in the field of Occupational Safety & Health
  • Minimum 5 - 7 years of experience in construction safety management, preferably with exposure to large-scale infrastructure or marine terminal projects
  • Proficient in Microsoft Power Point, Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills required
  • Strong analytical and technical skills
  • Excellent people skills and professional demeanor. Ability to teach and communicate effectively at all levels of the organization
  • Knowledge of potentially hazardous materials and practices
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, nationally recognized standards and guidelines, such as BC Workers Compensation Act and Transport Canada Shipping Act 2001
  • Familiarity with the Safety Management System and ISO 45001 standards are a plus
  • Knowledge of the maritime industry and its unique safety challenges
  • Basic understanding of ergonomics and industrial hygiene practices
