Job Summary
The Human Rights Advisor manages the enterprise-wide Code of Business Ethics Program including leading human rights investigations and resolution of incidents and reports of workplace harassment, discrimination and wrongdoing. They will build organizational capacity for prevention and lead initiatives to foster a fair and respectful workplace including mediation, coaching and restoration, The role and provides expert advisory support to senior leadership and partners with leadership and employees to foster a respectful workplace, integrate equity in all aspects of the organization, and ensure compliance with organizational policies, human rights standards and legal requirements.
By identifying systemic barriers and advancing inclusive practices, the role helps foster a respectful, inclusive, equity-focused and supportive workplace culture.
Major Responsibilities
- Build, improve and implement Code of Business Ethics, human rights programs and risk management initiatives that foster a respectful workplace, and promote ethical conduct, compliance with Code of Business Ethics and equity across the organization.
- Lead the triage and assessment of complaints and reports and conduct impartial investigations into high risk and complex reports of harassment, discrimination. and Code of Business Ethics violations, leveraging legal and policy subject matter expertise
- Build organizational capability for resolution by building and leading restorative strategies such as, mediations, formal and informal resolution processes. Direct and provide technical advice and expertise in fact-finding and dispute resolution related to incidents and reported violations of the Code of Business Ethics, including influence and consultation with senior decision makers to get alignment on benefits derived from proposed solutions.
- Act as a technical resource, providing strategic direction, advice and guidance to senior management and Human Resources
- Plan, develop, implement and sustain applicable HR/ELR policies and procedures (COBE, Disclosure of Wrongdoing, Respectful Workplace, Conflict of Interest).
- Build and implement a continuous improvement program that identifies systemic risks and barriers in people processes.
- Identify risks, develop strategies and provide technical advisory to people function to embed equity and inclusion in people processes such as recruitment, performance management, and leadership development.
- Design a learning strategy and develop a curriculum of training focused on respectful workplace practices, unconscious bias, and inclusive leadership, including role specific and Enterprise-wide learning.
- Lead the review, development, and implementation of ethical and inclusive practices across Enterprise.
- Develop and implement employee experience accessibility and employee disability inclusion strategies in compliance with AODA and other standards.
- Occasionally provide testimony at Grievance Arbitration and other adjudicative hearings on behalf of WSIB.
- Analyze people data to identify systemic barriers and recommend equity-focused interventions.
- Stakeholder Management
- Lead the external investigator vendor management process to ensure high integrity and consistent processes, including procurement processes
- Ensure workplace stakeholder expertise is appropriately consulted/included in all human rights and ethics conversations (e.g., Privacy Office, Regulatory Services Division, IT, Legal, Corp. Compliance, Health & Safety)
- Plan, execute and participate in enterprise-wide projects and programs that support compliance in the program area and/or result in process efficiencies.
- Lead and/or participate in branch projects as required. Partner and collaborate with other HR or business areas on their projects that include human rights and EDI components.
Job Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in human resources, human rights, workplace investigations, and equity, diversity and inclusion roles.
- Licensed Employment or Human Rights lawyer (called to the bar in Ontario).
- Extensive HR experience with a strong understanding of inclusive and equitable people processes.
- Strong understanding of human rights legislation and HR practices in both public and private sectors.
- Experience conducting investigations and facilitating restorative or mediated resolutions.
- Knowledge of equity frameworks, accessibility standards, and inclusive HR strategies.
- Excellent communication, analytical, and facilitation skills.
