Position Summary:

As part of the management team, the Finance Controller oversees all aspects of the financial management of programs and administrative operations of the Wet'suwet'en Nation's administration office. They will ensure effective program delivery in a cost-effective manner.

The Finance Controller will provide supervision to the Finance Department and Receptionist to ensure effective, culturally appropriate services for the Office of the Wet'suwet'en. The incumbent Is accountable for reporting all financial performance per their delegated authority granted by the Chiefs.

The performance of the Finance Controller will be considered synonymous with the financial performance of the organization.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Financial Management

  • Provide leadership and direction in financial management and evaluation of service and program delivery across various departments such as Human and Social Services, Child and Family Jurisdiction, Economic Development, Natural Resources, and Fisheries and Wildlife.
  • Ensure all financial activities are in compliance with the Wet'suwet'en Charter of Governance / Legislation.
  • Guide all finance activities across the organization in alignment with accordance with agreements, acts, regulations, and standards.
  • Manage and oversee the activities of the Finance department, contracted resources, and all assets.
  • Receive financial goals and directions from the Chief and develop activities and plans for its achievement.
  • Be aware of and follow finance policies and procedures.

Operations

  • Ensure Program managers are delivering programs in a financially sound matter that is culturally sound.
  • Oversee the various finance department functions such as accounts payable, receivable and payroll.

Board of Directors

  • Prepare and present reports at Board of Directors meetings as required.
  • Provide Board of Directors with regular reports outlining activities and program updates.
  • Escalate any issues or financial sensitivities within programs or departments to the Board of Directors attention.

Relationship and People Management

  • Understand, follow, and support human resource policies by modeling respectful behaviors.
  • Promote and support a positive working environment aligned with the culture and values of the Wet'suwet'en.
  • Foster and nurture relation between the Band, various levels of government and external agencies.
  • Maintain good working relationships within the Management Team.
  • Oversee the smooth operations of staff, ensuring they are resolving any conflict that may occur in accordance with best practices.
  • Support human resources functions such as recruitment and selection, training, and performance planning and appraisals in support of the Management Team.

Collectively support Office of the Wet'suwet'en priorities and operations by collaborating and assisting team members with activities including but not limited to sharing knowledge and a helping hand.

Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge, or willingness to learn, of Wet'suwet'en Clan/House Group lineage and House Chief Traditions.
  • Willingness to learn and participate in Wet'suwet'en Culture and Traditional functions.
  • A customer-centric attitude with ability to remain calm and composed during potential shifts in priorities, deadlines, or urgent requests.
  • Strong understanding of and compliance with confidentiality and a professional code of conduct.
  • A clear criminal record and credit check.
  • Wet'suwet'en Cultural Education: Demonstration of cultural knowledge of the governance system, language, cultural protocols for caring for children/youth, and food harvesting experience. The successful applicant must be an active participant in the Feast Hall and demonstrate a commitment to life-long cultural learning.

Experience and Education Requirements:

  • A post-secondary degree in business, accounting, or commerce is required.
  • Two (2) – five (5) years of relevant work experience within finance or accounting is required.
  • Experience working in a finance department within a First Nation environment is considered an asset.
  • Possession of or working towards the CPA designation.
  • Excellent computer literacy with Microsoft 365, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Strong knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll are considered an asset.
  • High attention to detail and typing accuracy.
  • Good planning skills including the ability to prioritize and adjust to shifting needs.
  • Clear, concise, and polite written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid BC Drivers License and reliable vehicle.
  • An understanding of Wet'suwet'en Culture and systems
  • Fluency in Wet'suwet'en (is an asset).

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $40.00-$52.00 per hour

Expected hours: 35 per week
