Job summary

The Times Colonist has a full-time, on-site journalist position open in the Editorial Department. The selected individual will perform copy editing, layout functions, headline and photo-caption writing, story rewriting and web posting. The position is in-person and based in our office in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

Description of duties

  • Edit stories and lay out pages.
  • Stories should be edited for structure, flow, style and accuracy.
  • Maintain high standards of editing, grammar and spelling.
  • Check questionable elements with the writer or wire service and correct errors.
  • Write bright, concise and accurate headlines, cutlines, etc.
  • Pages, for both news and features, should be well-designed and reader-friendly.
  • Produce compelling story/photograph packages.
  • Proof-read, correct and update stories and pages as required.
  • Monitor news, wire services and social media for breaking news and top stories.
  • Create, manage and update content in print and for and other digital properties with text, photos, videos, etc.
  • Engage readers as required through email, social media and other elements.
  • Be a team player and assist colleagues as required.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary journalism accreditation or equivalent newspaper experience.
  • High level of computer literacy and internet knowledge.
  • Excellent editing and writing skills.
  • Working knowledge of various publishing programs, including InDesign.
  • Proven skills with layout and design, and a flair for eye-catching and readable page design.
  • Experience with posting to the web and social media preferred.
  • Experience with digital photographs, including selection and appropriate play.
  • Good critical thinking and problem-solving skills; able to work independently.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills; able to take and follow directions.
  • Able to work under deadline pressure.
  • Must project a professional public image on behalf of the newspaper.
  • Must understand the importance of customer service.
  • Keen interest in local places and events.
