Software Development Lead

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Affinity Full time

Job Description:

We are looking for a Software Development Lead to act as the technical bridge between a Senior Engineering Manager and a growing development team. This role is highly hands-on and combines full-stack engineering (TypeScript / / React) with day-to-day technical leadership for a small group of developers.

The Development Lead will take ownership of key projects, support architectural and system design decisions, and help elevate code quality and delivery practices. They will report into the Senior Engineering Manager who currently oversees ~10 developers and QA/automation resources and needs a strong lead on the ground to provide leadership, guidance, and support.

This is a hybrid 3 days in-office role based in Vancouver, working closely with the development team while collaborating with remote leaders and contributors.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a small pod of 3–4 developers, providing day-to-day technical direction, mentorship, and code review.
  • Remain hands-on with development using TypeScript, React, and to deliver new features, enhancements, and fixes.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Engineering Manager on architecture and system design decisions for core web applications and services.
  • Own end-to-end delivery for assigned projects: planning, estimation, implementation, testing support, and deployment.
  • Partner with backend engineers and QA/automation to ensure reliability, performance, and robust test coverage.
  • Contribute to and help enforce engineering best practices (coding standards, review processes, documentation).
  • Help translate product and business requirements into technical solutions and clear work items for the team.
  • Support the growth and development of junior/intermediate developers through coaching and constructive feedback.
  • Participate in incident response and troubleshooting when production issues arise; help drive root cause analysis and prevention.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., product, marketing, operations) on initiatives that impact customer-facing applications.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience, with a focus on modern web applications.
  • Strong hands-on experience with TypeScript, React, and in production environments.
  • 1–2+ years of technical leadership experience – leading projects, guiding developers, or acting as a tech lead; formal people management is a plus but not required.
  • Solid grounding in system design and application architecture for scalable, high-traffic or data-heavy web products.
  • Experience in tech or eCommerce environments; retail or online commerce exposure is a plus but not mandatory.
  • Familiarity with Shopify, Hydrogen, or Shopify APIs is considered an asset, but strong TypeScript/React/Node skills are more important.
  • Comfortable collaborating in a hybrid environment, working closely with onsite teams and remote leaders.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly and build trust with cross-functional partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and support junior and intermediate developers.

Why Join

This role offers the opportunity to be a key technical leader in a growing product organization: you'll be the "go-to" person between senior leadership and the dev team, shaping architecture, mentoring engineers, and still writing code every day. It's a high-impact, hybrid position in Vancouver, ideal for someone who wants more ownership and leadership responsibility without stepping away from hands-on development.
