Job Profile

The City of Cambridge has a temporary opening for Water Trainee PM Crew (Temporary 5 months) working within the Water Division of the Infrastructure Services Department available immediately. Reporting to the Supervisor of Water, the following requirements apply:

What you will be doing

This position is responsible for testing, monitoring, operating and the preventative maintenance of the City of Cambridge's Water Distribution System. Water Operator's principle responsibilities are as follows:

  • Works within the Water subdivision, performing preventative maintenance activities on water distribution infrastructure, including water main and hydrant flushing, water leak detection and investigation, troubleshooting customer complaints, hydrant inspections, water main valve exercising, monitoring chlorine residuals.
  • Assists certified water operators in maintaining chlorine residuals throughout the system, isolating water mains, record keeping, and underground utility locates.
  • Operation of electronic leak detection equipment (noise loggers, correlators, laptop, tablet), water distribution tools (valve keys, geophones, hydrant wrenches, sledge hammers and picks, various hand tools), as well as pick-up trucks and utility vans, hydraulic valve turners, etc.
  • All work performed is under the supervision of certified Water Operators and/or Water Lead Hand.
  • Will gain basic awareness of all Water operating procedures, work order management, GIS mapping system, and relevant corporate policies and procedures.
Education

High school Grade 12 diploma or equivalent

Minimum Requirements
  • Experience of over 6 month, up to and including 12 months work related experience.

A valid Ontario Class DZ driver's license in good standing, with a driver's abstract acceptable to the City (4 or less demerit point may be considered acceptable, considering the nature of infractions).

  • Possess Operator-In-Training License for Water Distribution or Water Distribution and Supply (OIT- WD/WS), as issued by the MECP

  • Ability to operate various pieces of equipment

  • Ability to operate small maintenance tools and hand tools

  • Ability to work with different computer software

Location and Hours of Work

This position is located at the Bishop Operation Centre, Cambridge Ontario.

Regular hours of work for this position are Monday to Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. (40 hours per week) with the requirement to be available for overtime as needed. (40 hours per week)

We will ask you for these items if you are hired

Valid DZ driver's license

Worker Health and Safety Awareness Training certificate from the Ministry of Labour. (may be obtained post offer)

Proof of your current and valid certificate(s) and/or educational qualifications.

Current and valid Police Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check to be provided prior to commencement in this position.

Confirmation that you are physically able to perform the essential duties of the position, as assessed through our third party provider, prior to commencement in the position.

Your compensation

This position is located within our CUPE 32 (outside workers union) compensation salary schedule Job Grade 2 and has an hourly rate of pay is as follows (2025 Rate):

Starting Rate: $29.56 per hour

12-Month Rate: $30.47 per hour

24-Month Rate: $31.39 per hour
