The Organization

The employer for this position is Canadian Religious Stewardship (CRS), a not-for-profit charitable organization established by Catholic Religious Institutes from across Canada. CRS is assisting Catholic Religious Sisters and Priests across Canada. This position will be based at Presentation Manor for Seniors in Scarborough, Ontario.

The Sisters and Priests live together in community with other religious and laypersons in independent, assisted living, and memory care at Presentation Manor for Seniors and at Providence Health Care.

The Position

Reporting to the CRS Care & Operations Manager, the Care Companion is responsible for enhancing the well-being of Presentation Manor residents, with a focus on providing companionship and assistance. Your responsibilities will include offering support to residents who may be less active, especially in the Providence Healthcare Facility and Assisted Living at Presentation Manor. This role requires a compassionate and attentive approach to address the personal needs of residents, ensuring their comfort and maintaining a caring environment.

Shifts may vary between providing dedicated, one-on-one support to a single resident or offering care and companionship to multiple residents, depending on daily needs.

This is a casual position with no guaranteed hours, however, predictable working hours may be available during employee leaves, depending on operational needs.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Collaboration with CRS and Presentation Manor:

• The CRS Health Care team works collaboratively with other CRS staff and the Presentation Manor Director of Care and Health Care team to support residents and congregations. While we play an essential role in care coordination, final decisions for residents living at Presentation Manor rest with their Director of Care.
• Work in partnership with each member of the Religious congregations and the Presentation Manor and CRS care teams to support individual care and service plans aligned with identified priorities and desired outcomes.
• Maintain confidentiality and promptly report any needs or concerns to the RPN on shift and the Care & Operations Manager (CRS), as applicable, ensuring appropriate communication and follow-up.
• Complete other duties as assigned by the CRS Care & Operations Manager.

Companionship and Visitations:

• Regularly visit residents who may be less active, fostering connections through conversation, companionship, and emotional support.

Personal Care Assistance:

• Monitor and assist with personal needs, such as clothing, toiletries, hearing aids, and other necessities.

Room Maintenance:

• Assist residents with the care of their rooms, ensuring cleanliness and organization.

Health Monitoring:

• Observe and report any changes in the health of residents to the nursing team, particularly RPNs on shift, while maintaining overall reporting responsibility to the Care & Operations Manager (CRS), ensuring open communication channels.

Accompaniment and Assistance:

• Accompany residents to activities, appointments, and meals as needed, providing assistance and support.

Post-Operative and Illness Support:

• Offer help to residents experiencing brief illnesses or post-operative recovery, ensuring their comfort and well-being.

Requirements

• Experience in healthcare, personal support, or senior care
• Personal Support Worker Certificate or equivalent
• Compassionate and caring, with a strong commitment to respecting the dignity and autonomy of seniors
• Understanding and support of Catholic values and the religious life of Sisters and Priests
• Adaptable, self-directed with an ability to work collaboratively
• Proficiency in email communication and document preparation
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build meaningful connections and provide emotional support
• Physically capable of fulfilling job duties
• Read, write and communicate effectively in English
• First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)
• Vulnerable Sector Police Check

Location

The candidate will work out of the CRS office at Presentation Manor for Seniors in Scarborough.
