The Facilities Engineering Department provides services to ensure that the facility, equipment and systems are maintained and meet growing demands through continuous improvement projects.
Within Facilities Engineering, the Facilities Design Engineering Team plays a key role in developing equipment and systems that support Redlen's manufacturing operations which transform raw material into detector module products.  FDE's mandate includes developing mechanical, electromechanical & digital control systems to support safety, cost reduction, performance, reliability improvement, and Redlen's future high volume manufacturing capability.
As a Mechanical Designer in FDE, you will design and document jigs, fixtures, and tooling that enable efficient production and testing. You'll work closely with cross-functional teams to solve mechanical challenges and deliver practical, high-quality solutions for manufacturing and R&D environments.

Responsibilities
Equipment, Jigs, Fixtures & Tooling

Design jigs and fixtures for new or modified in-house equipment.
Source or develop equipment to address key metrics as defined by internal customers.
Conduct proof-of-concept design and development, document findings, and present reports at meetings.
Support Production, R&D, and Test Engineering teams by investigating mechanical issues, evaluating root causes, and ensuring implemented design improvements or corrective actions address real-world problems.
Utilize additive manufacturing to rapidly prototype, iterate, and deliver low-volume tooling or fixture components.

Designers oversee print quality, material selection, and 3D printer operation.

CAD, Drafting & Documentation

Fully document designs (e.g., generate 3D CAD models, create fabrication and assembly drawings/work instructions, BOMs, schematics).
Register fabrication and assembly drawings using Redlen's documentation process.
Incorporate DFM and DFA principles into all designs to ensure efficient fabrication, assembly, inspection, and maintenance of components and equipment.
Apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), appropriate mechanical tolerances, and perform tolerance stack-up analysis to ensure fit, performance, and manufacturability of components and assemblies for both prototype and mass production when relevant.

Process & Design Methodology

Identify opportunities to build industry-standard engineering design best practices into processes and draft changes for leadership review, ensuring alignment with business needs.
Use design management guidelines to identify design requirements and constraints to drive concept development.
Select appropriate materials, components, and fasteners based on mechanical performance, manufacturability, chemical compatibility, availability, cost, and operational requirements.

Other

Interface with internal and external fabricators, machine shops, and suppliers to clarify design intent, resolve manufacturability questions, and support cost and lead-time optimization.
Receive supplier parts and conduct FAI to ensure specifications and quality expectations have been met before handover to production, supply chain and QA.
Participate in prototype builds, fit checks, and functional evaluations to verify design intent and support iterative improvement.
Other duties as assigned and relevant to the role.

Qualifications
Experience Required

5+ years of industry experience.
Experience designing equipment including jigs/fixtures in a production/manufacturing environment.
Proficiency with SolidWorks and AutoCAD or similar 3D/2D CAD programs.
Design optimization for cost, including minimizing complexity and appropriate tolerancing.
Demonstrated rigorous understanding of drafting component drawings for traditional manufacturing methods (CNC machining, turning, plastic forming, injection molding or similar).
Familiarity with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
Proficiency with MS Office programs.

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree or technical diploma in mechanical/mechatronics or equivalent.

Salary Range: $90,000 - $110,000 CAD
