Position Summary

Therapy Services at the BC Centre for Ability includes the Early Intervention Therapy program, the North Shore School Occupational Therapy Program, the Community Brain Injury Team and SET-BC. The Early Intervention Therapy Program provides physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and social work support for over 1000 children and their families. Services are provided in the child's natural environments, through clinic and group opportunities, and focus on helping the child become successful in their daily routines and participation in home and community life. The North Shore School Occupational Therapy Program offers services to students, educational staff and parents to achieve student educational goals. Occupational Therapists use a collaborative model consultation to evaluate how a student's environment, and physical, cognitive and self-regulation skills impact their ability to participate in daily occupations. Work as part of an interdisciplinary team to provide therapy services to children within the context of their family and community environment. Effective collaboration, communication and organizational skills will be paramount for this position. Services will be delivered in family homes, in clinic, in community settings and by virtual platforms. Departmental assignments are subject to operational and departmental needs.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the child's occupational needs and how they impact participation in a variety of environments
  • Use a coaching approach with families to educate and implement therapeutic programs based on goals
  • Use Evidence Based Practice and Family Centered Care to guide decision making when developing goals and therapeutic programs
  • Prescribe and assist in obtaining equipment to optimize the child's participation in everyday activities
  • Consult to caregivers in the child's life as appropriate, including family, preschools, daycares and schools.
  • Maintain up to date records to assess outcomes and meet agency and regulatory body requirements
  • Collaborate with their client's service providers including community partners
  • Undertake additional responsibilities as directed

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience
  • Master's degree or equivalent in OT or Rehabilitation Medicine (OT)
  • Experience working in pediatrics is preferred
  • Training in Motivational Interviewing and/or Brief Action Planning an asset
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Practices occupational therapy using the People, Environment, Occupation model to optimize participation
  • Collaborates with clients using the F-words of childhood development framework and a commitment to inclusive practice and family centered care
  • A basic understanding of feeding/swallowing difficulties and management is considered an asset
  • A basic understanding of positioning and equipment prescription is considered an asset
  • Proven collaboration, communication and consultation skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proven organization and time management skills are required
  • Ability to adapt to change and embrace new technology
  • Competency using a virtual platform, electronic client record system and word processing software

  • Valid BC Driver's license with reliable use of car for work with business insurance
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
