Director of Engineering
Location:
Toronto, ON (Hybrid - 3 days/week in office is HIGHLY preferred)
Industry:
3D visualization / CAD-style desktop software / real-time systems
Compensation Range - $
base+ share plan and benefits
Travel:
:10% Globlal, aprroximately once a quarter + Parent Company events
About The Company
SRA Staffing has partnered with a
well-established Canadian software company
that builds
3D visualization and design tools
used in large-scale events and complex installations.
Their products combine:
- 3D scene and lighting visualization
- CAD-like 2D/3D drafting and geometry
- Real-time integration with external systems and hardware
They are backed by a large global software group, but the local team still feels like a
tight, product-focused engineering shop
with a mix of long-tenured staff and newer talent.
The Opportunity
The company is rebuilding its
flagship desktop application
from the ground up. The current product is a mature, on-prem desktop tool with a legacy graphics stack. Your mandate is to lead the engineering team that will:
- Design and build the next generation of this application
- Modernize the tech stack for performance, maintainability, and future features
- Combine 3D visualization, drafting, and real-time integration in a single coherent platform
This role is both
strategic and hands-on
. You will own the technical direction, but you will also review design and code, dive into performance issues, and work directly with engineers to ship.
There is a clear path for this position to evolve into the
top technical leadership role
as the current senior technical leader gradually steps back.
What You Will Do
Engineering Leadership
- Lead a small, focused team of software engineers and DevOps (currently :14 people)
- Set expectations, coach the team, and drive execution against the roadmap
- Raise the bar on code quality, testing, and release practices
Architecture and Modernization
- Own the architecture for a new desktop platform that replaces a legacy graphics-heavy system
- Evaluate and select appropriate engines, frameworks, and component tech with the asstiance of a Sr tenured team (rendering, geometry, CI/CD, etc.)
- Ensure the product can meet strict performance and reliability requirements
Hands-On Technical Contribution
- Stay close to the code: review designs, guide implementation, and step in when needed
- Work through complex problems in areas like rendering, geometry, and integration with external systems
Cross-Functional and External Engagement
- Partner with Product and Operations on priorities and trade-offs
- Communicate clearly with executives, engineers, and non-technical stakeholders
- Take part in key Global industry events and trade shows (approx. 10% travel) and be comfortable speaking with customers and partners
What We Are Looking For
Technical Background
- Strong background in desktop or real-time software (not purely web/e-commerce)
Experience in one or more of:
Game engines or real-time 3D
- Simulation / visualization tools
- CAD / 2D-3D drafting / geometric modeling
AR/VR or related interactive systems
Experience modernizing or rebuilding a complex product, ideally from a legacy native stack to a more modern architecture
- Comfortable evaluating rendering and engine technologies and working with DevOps teams on build/release pipelines
Leadership and Style
- Experience leading a team of roughly 10-20 engineers
- Background as a hands-on developer (Computer Science, Engineering or similar) and still comfortable on the keyboard when it is needed
- Ambitious, with a genuine interest in growing into a broader technical leadership role over time
Location and Work Pattern
- Based in the GTA or willing to relocate
- Able to work 3 days per week in the downtown office with your team but with flexibility.
- Open to occasional travel (conferences, customer visits, internal events)
Compensation and Package
- Base salary: Target range $170, depending on experience
- Share plan: Employee share purchase program with company match
- Vacation and PTO: 3 weeks + 6 days PTO - (PARENT COMPANY STANDARD)
