The base salary will be $75,000 - $95,000 per annum. Starting salary will be aligned with the successful candidate's experience, skills, and demonstrated qualifications.

About Us

The Faculty of Health Sciences is a large, diverse, and comprehensive unit, comprised of seven Schools (Nursing, Kinesiology, Health Studies, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Communication Sciences and Disorders and Food and Nutritional Sciences), a large Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and four Research Centers. The Faculty has more than 4,000 undergraduate students and more than 900 graduate students (200 PhD students).

The National Centre for Audiology (NCA) is recognized nationally and internationally as a centre of excellence and leadership in Audiology and Hearing Science research. The NCA provides an environment in which researchers from many disciplines work cooperatively to expand knowledge of hearing function and problems, address the needs of people with hearing impairment, and develop behavioural and technological methods to assist persons with hearing loss. Successes include research productivity and leadership, and ongoing collaboration with hearing health care providers and industries.

Responsibilities

The Senior Systems Engineer is a key member of the Innovations in Hearing Aid Technology Laboratory, reporting directly to the Director of the Laboratory, and is responsible for the development of custom software applications and hardware implementation, the ALLEars Project, as well as management of outreach supports to investigators who seek the services of the Hearing Health Research Core (HHCR) facility, an Institutional Core Facility located within the NCA. The role will be responsible for writing, coding, testing and analyzing software programs and applications, designing and building custom systems to meet the requirements of research studies, and technology transfer goals.

The Senior Systems Engineer provides development expertise within the team and support for various applications, mentoring and guidance to work study students, junior staff members, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars who are NCA trainees. The role is responsible for continuous research, analysis, and identification of software development trends and for promoting these and other informative resources to the team.

The role takes a leading role in solution designs for applications that support access, management, analysis and long-term preservation of critical digital assets of the projects and support of the HHCR's external partnerships.

Qualifications

Education:

  • University degree in Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related field
  • Strong background in design, development and building of software and hardware systems
  • Proficiency in Linux (Unix) operating system and network configuration
  • Proficiency in several software programming languages (C#, C/C++, MATLAB, Java, Javascript, Swift, Python, and Rust) and app design
  • Comprehensive understanding of the concepts, tools and best practices in technology infrastructure life cycle as well as IT service management, governance and operational practices is essential

Experience:

  • 5 years' progressive experience in software development and as a lead application programmer
  • 5 years demonstrated experience in hardware development and support for IT infrastructure
  • 5 years in system design

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of audiology, hearing science, audio equipment and acoustics
  • In-depth knowledge of software engineering principles with fluency in a variety of computer software programs and languages to meet software development needs
  • Proficiency in network/server system configurations and design and PC operating systems (Windows and O SX)
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of Linux(unix) operating system and network configuration
  • Knowledge of Western Technology Services requirements for network servers
  • Technical support skills and with the ability to assist and collaborate in the development and potential transfer of software and hardware systems to other research sites or to industry
  • Strong knowledge of electrical design
  • Proficiency in Embedded Systems, Mobile application development, Database design (MySQl, mongoDB, REDCap)
  • Demonstrated in depth knowledge of several software programming languages (i.e., C#, C/C++, MATLAB, Java, JavaScript, Swift, SQL, NoSQl, Python, and Rust)
  • Ability to write clear, concise procedural and technical documentation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively interact with technical and non-technical users
  • Ability to resolve problems and escalate issues with suggestions for further investigation and options for consideration as required
  • Initiative to seek and share relevant information, opinions, and judgments
  • Demonstrated organizational skills including ability to handle frequent interruptions and manage multiple competing priorities, working to tight time lines with appropriate supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to research/investigate issues and resolve problems
  • Ability to re-evaluate current procedures and suggest creative ideas for improvement
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with peers, contacts with access to information, and key business partners
