Role Responsibilities

Working closely with the CFO Director, Legal Counsel, and staff, as a Paralegal you will support the rest of the CFO and litigation counsel in civil forfeiture matters and serves as a primary office contact for legal professionals, law enforcement, the general public, and the courts. By working as part of a collaborative team in this unique practice area, you will help ensure the Civil Forfeiture program meets its objectives.  

Job duties will include, but are not limited to the following:

•    Reviewing police referrals (investigative files), determine completeness, identify issues, and prepare file summary for lawyer.

•    Performing informational searches.

•    Drafting legal; correspondence.

•    Ensuring compliance with civil forfeiture legislation and regulations and CFO policies.

•    Managing and organizing files and voluminous records.

•    Liaising with police, Crown prosecutors, and lLawyers handling civil forfeiture cases regarding referrals and file status.

•    Use tools such as Outlook; Microsoft Word; JOIN; and other databases to carry out responsibilities.

•    Any other paralegal duties as required.

As the successful candidate, you will perform high quality work, sometimes under significant time pressures, while meeting critical deadlines. The ability to proactively handle many tasks with limited instruction and self-prioritize a high-volume workload is vital. You will work accurately and promptly applying correct spelling, grammar, and legal terminology, and must have strong writing, research, and technical/computer skills.

Qualifications

A two-year diploma in a related field plus three years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below.

Directly related experience or education considered on the basis of: 1 year of experience for 1 year of education or 1 year of education for 1 year of experience.

The following are considered requirements for this role:

•    Two (2) or more years of paralegal experience with the Alberta (or any provincial) Crown Prosecution Service, the Public Prosecution Service of Canada, or a criminal law firm.

•    Experience reviewing and summarizing police investigative file materials.

The following are considered assets for this role:

•    Knowledge of criminal procedure.

•    Familiarity with civil forfeiture legislation and civil procedure.

•    Experience drafting and managing correspondence, memoranda, legal precedents and reports.

Office will be located in Downtown Edmonton. 
Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week (permanent full time)
Monday to Friday (8:15 am to 4:30 pm)
