Steelhead Trout, Farmed Responsibly
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, more than a third of global fish stocks are currently subject to overfishing. The organization also recognizes aquaculture as an essential measure for reducing the burden on wild fish stocks, while providing a sustainable and nutritious protein source for consumers.
Nova Fish Farms, a subsidiary of Ocean Trout Canada, is an independent, Canadian owned organization focused on steelhead trout farming and has a unique opportunity to bring sustainable steelhead trout to the North American market. We are rapidly expanding our current production to meet consumer demand and are seeking a Vessel Captain to join our team in St. Alban's, NL.
Reports to: Marine Operations Manager
Duties and responsibilities but not limited to:
- Overall feed vessel operations, including navigation, safety, maintenance, and supervising the crew
- Ensure the vessel is operated in compliance with Regulations
- Ensure that Safety Protocols, Policies and Procedures are followed
- Maintain logs and records of vessel operations
- Conduct inspections
- Operating machinery such as cranes, compressors, forklifts, etc.
- Assist the utility crew with site setups, daily site maintenance, net washing, and harvesting as needed
Other:
- Must have a Fishing Master IV Certificate
- Knowledge of marine open net pen aquaculture facilities
- Strong understanding of maritime safety regulations and best practices
- Knowledge of navigation and logistics
- Tact and good judgement in dealing with people and stressful situations
- Strong leadership and communications skills
- Strong work ethic
- Must be eligible to work in Canada
Job Type: Full-time, permanent
Expected hours: 40 per week; standard hours are from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, following the continental shift pattern.
