Athletics Head of Department

The Athletics Head of Department at Bronte College plays a dynamic leadership role in shaping a vibrant and inclusive school sports culture. This position oversees the full athletics program, manages all Extra-Curricular sports activities, and leads the Student Athletics Council to foster student voice and engagement. The role also includes coordinating and supporting the Duke of Edinburgh Award, scheduling and organizing coaches and teams for ROPSSAA events, and working closely with our Grade 9 and 10 students in a supportive Guidance capacity. Ideal candidates will be energetic, organized, and passionate about inspiring and mentoring students through sport, activity, and personal development.
Key Accountabilities
· Lead assigned academic department.
o Support teachers with lesson planning and assessment and evaluation.
o Provide in-class support for teachers experiencing difficulties with program delivery.
o Ensure Ministry of Education course outline revisions are completed.
o Ensure curriculum revisions are implemented as per Ministry of Education expectations.
o Ensure consistency in assessment for multi-section courses.
o Ensure teacher classrooms and bulletin boards are displayed appropriately, reflect student performance and are current in nature.
o Assist teachers in the department with initial and minor discipline concerns.
o Ensure teachers have regular communication with parents.
o Ensure field trip procedures are adhered to by teachers
· Textbook recommendations, inventory and distribution.
· Organize external competitions, contests and tests.
· Ensure related staff is aware of notable student issues.
o Communicate information with guidance staff (i.e. attendance, emotional issues, etc.).
o Communicate very serious student issues with the Head of School.
· Lead and be responsible for at least one extra curricular activity or club.
· Ensure the safety of students during class and related field trips.
o Follow field trip procedures; ensure students are dressed appropriately and always safe.
o In the classroom for the entire duration of an assigned class.
o Ensuring students are in class for the duration of the period.
o Report all safety concerns to the Head of School or Maintenance Supervisor.
· Exam supervision as scheduled.
o Collect textbooks and other course material that students return.
Guidance
- Provide individual students counseling for academic, social and emotional needs
- Monitoring and review of students at the interim and mid-term reporting periods
- AEP implementation each reporting period
- Participate in course selection process and course changes
- University Liaison – organization and scheduling of university fair
- Make recommendations for independent courses for students
- Schedule support tutoring (peer tutoring)
- Parent inquiries re course selection and special student needs
- Liaison with office staff re TT, class changes, transcripts, biographical info
- Assist Head of School and Head of Guidance with TT preparation (whole year)
- Assist Head of School and Head of Guidance with scheduling of new or added courses and staff assignment
- Advise Head of School on course offerings for course calendar
- Lead course selection process
- Assist Head of School with program and parent information nights
- Oversee the ILC and help Head of School supervise university Co-op students
Other
· Communicate student progress with parents regularly.
o Informing parents of student issues, successes and concerns in a reasonable time.
o Respond to parent's questions in a reasonable time.
· Attend parent-teacher interviews, staff meetings, department head meetings, school dances or events (when scheduled), open houses.
· Ensure students are abiding by the Bronte College Code of Behaviour at all times.
o Providing first level discipline as required.
o Bring up repeat cases or very serious incidents to Head of Student Governance or Head of School.
· Being available for students during office hours and providing help for students when requested and reasonable.
· Assist with marketing efforts of the school.
o Maintain neat and tidy classrooms with professionally displayed student work or curriculum related material in classroom and hallway bulletin boards.
o Aware of school programs (i.e. Advanced Placement (AP), tutoring, summer camp) and able to speak about and answer questions about the programs.
o Attend Open Houses to answer questions from potential parents and students and give guided tours.
· To complete any additional duties assigned by the Head of School.
Working Conditions
Hours of work: weekdays 8:00am to 4:00pm; evening and weekend hours may be required for school dances, parent teacher nights, staff meetings, curriculum nights, open houses.
Minimum Requirements
· University Degree or College diploma in related course teachable background.
· Ontario College of Teachers certified and in good standing.
· Experience with adolescents in a teaching setting.
· Excellent command of the English language.
· Experience using a SMARTBoard.
· Experience using a computer and computer applications.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $44,524.46-$57,927.48 per year
