KEY FUNCTION:

Perform diagnostic imaging procedures using a variety of radiographic equipment to produce high-quality diagnostic images that support accurate diagnosis and excellent patient care. Provide radiology and mammography services to a variety of areas including in-patient units, outpatient services, surgical departments, emergency departments and off-site outpatient clinics.

REPORTING:

Under the general direction the Supervisor, Medical Imaging Radiology.

DUTIES:

1. Ensure the safe and appropriate operation of radiologic equipment, including x-ray machines, portable x-ray devices, c-arms, o-arm, fluoroscopic, mammography and stereotactic breast biopsy equipment, according to manufacturer guidelines, hospital policy, college certification and legislative standards.
2. Perform and record routine quality control, troubleshoot equipment and/or procedure issues and contact appropriate service providers to ensure optimal functionality.
3. Document patient medical histories, including any relevant information about previous imaging exams, allergies, surgeries and breast concerns.
4. Position patients and adjust equipment to obtain high quality diagnostic images as directed by the order from the referring practitioner and/or departmental protocol; communicate effectively by explaining the examination/procedure to patients and their families to ensure ongoing consent, comfort and understanding; monitor throughout.
5. Adhere strictly to radiation protection practices, applicable legislation, clinical standards and department policies and procedures by applying as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) principles and ensure proper technical parameters are selected for each procedure.
6. Adhere to the Standards of Practice as outlined by the College of Medical Radiation Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO) and maintain an active license with CRMITO.
7. Adhere to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of the OBSP.
8. Maintain competency in the radiology examinations performed and equipment used within the department.
9. Evaluate images for quality and accuracy; repeat or adjust exposures as required and document.
10. Maintain records and documentation according to department policy and procedures.
11. Collaborate with Radiologists, Physicians, Nurses and other healthcare professionals to ensure appropriate images are acquired and best possible patient outcomes are achieved.
12. Follow all infection control protocols to maintain a safe and clean environment.
13. Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
14. Ensure ongoing participation and compliance with Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) Mammography Accreditation Program (MAP) (e.g. complete applicable testing of equipment, image reviews, personel certifications, yearly updates, quality control (QC) testing and documentation).
15. Maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with healthcare privacy laws.
16. Assist with student education, supervision and evaluations as required.
17. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN's Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
18. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
19. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
20. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
21. Perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

1. Minimum of an Advanced Diploma in Radiography, from an accredited college.
2. Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO) is required.
3. Successful completion of Breast Imaging 1 and Breast Imaging 2 are required.
4. Imaging Breast Pathology, Certificate in Breast Imaging-Diagnosis (CBID) and Certificate in Breast-Imaging – Screening (CBIS) are preferred.
5. Current Certificate of Registration with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) is preferred.
6. Ministry of Labour "Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps" training certificate is required.

EXPERIENCE:

1. Recent and relevant experience working in Medical Imaging in a hospital or a clinical setting is preferred.

1. Demonstrated knowledge of operating diagnostic equipment with strong problem solving skils and ability to handle equipment related challenges.
2. Demonstated knowledge of positioning protocols and standards, with strong attention to detail and ability to ensure high quality images.
3. Demonstrated ability to perform a wide range of diagnostic tests and procedures.
4. Demonstrated ability to effectively analyze QC data for the purposes of quality control, verification of test results, and implement corrective action as required.
5. Demonstrated knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control Practices.
6. Demonstrated knowledge of radiation safety, protocols and protection regulations.
7. Demonstrated ability to mentor students and support personnel.
8. Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in general health care and community resources.
9. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
10. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
11. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
12. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
13. Demonstrated effective time managegment and strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload.
14. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
15. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
