The Animal Health and Assurance Branch (AHAB) consists of the Office of the Executive Director, Office of the Chief Provincial Veterinarian and three sections: Inspection and Investigation, Animal Health, Animal Welfare and Traceability.

AHAB works closely with Alberta's livestock industries to ensure that the province has:

  • robust animal health founded on surveillance.
  • animal welfare and food safety systems.
  • emergency and disease response.
  • premise identification to support national traceability.
  • effective inspection program.

Animal Health Surveillance Unit is staffed by veterinarians, veterinary technologists, data and mapping analysts and policy advisors. We do animal health surveillance, with industry, and in response to reportable disease. We work with industry, producers, and municipalities to understand and test for diseases that are risks to animals, food safety or people.

Role Responsibilities

Do you have a passion for animals and animal health? This Veterinary Technologist position provides front line services to producers, veterinarians and other clients of the Animal Health and Assurance Branch.

The Veterinary Technologist is a member of an animal health team in four locations across Alberta that participate in animal health surveillance activities for new and emerging diseases, responding to disease outbreaks, assisting in public health and assisting Alberta's livestock and poultry industries. Collaborating with livestock producers, veterinarians & scientists across the province, the Veterinary Technologist plays a key role in success for Alberta's livestock industries.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Post mortem room support including receiving, preparation and collection of samples for chronic wasting disease, rabies and salmonella among others. This position must properly identify samples, ship and dispose of extraneous tissues. Samples may come from domestic and wild animals (i.e. elk, skunks, poultry, environmental).
  • Field visits to assist in investigations, collect samples or deliver quarantines.
  • Maintaining supplies, housekeeping and cleaning and disinfection of post mortem room and facility to maintain CL2 Agric biosecurity standards and adhering to biosecurity standards at site visits.
  • Maintain quality control of instruments and equipment.
  • Administrative responsibilities related to managing work at the site, calls related to surveillance programs and receiving submissions. This person is also responsible for maintaining electronic and physical records and standard operating procedures.

Qualifications

Minimum Recruitment Standard:

  • Two-year technical diploma in Veterinary Technology or Animal Health Technology.

Additional Requirements:

  • Registered or eligible to be registered with the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association.
  • Preference will be given to those with a minimum 2 years of related experience.

Assets:

  • Training in WHIMIS and Dangerous Goods Transportation regulations.
  • Must have knowledge and basic concepts of biosecurity and bio-containment.
  • Must be able to utilize and maintain laboratory, post-mortem and office equipment.

Position Information:

  • Office located in Fairview, AB (Provincial Building & Courthouse, 10209 – 109 Street, Fairview, AB T0H 1L0).
  • Hours of Work: 29 hours per week.
  • The office is open Monday to Thursday (08:15 am-16:30 pm). The successful candidate will work the equivalent of 4 days per week.
  • Some travel is required during regular business hours for on-farm disease investigations.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license is required.
  • Must be able to lift up to 35 kg and stand for long periods of time.
  • Occasional overtime is required and is compensated either with time in lieu or money.
