Therapeutic Recreationist

Graduate of a recognized Recreation Therapy Certificate or Diploma program from an accredited community college.
2. Demonstrated knowledge and recent years of therapeutic experience in the field of pediatric rehabilitation services.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of the population of children and youth served by Ron Joyce Children's Health Centre.
4. Knowledge of adaptive equipment and technology, as well as personal mobility devices.
5. Demonstrated ability to modify tasks, promote independence and maximize participation in children and youth with physical and or developmental conditions.
6. Demonstrated ability to communicate a clear understanding of the Therapeutic Recreation role and outreach services to client/ family/staff as required.
7. Demonstrated sound judgment and clinical reasoning skills.
8. Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
9. Demonstrated ability to work on an interdisciplinary team in a dynamic, fast paced environment.
10. Demonstrated ability to work with children individually and in a group setting.
11. Demonstrated flexibility, communication, problem solving, organizational skills, and conflict resolutions skills.
12. Demonstrated ability to perform repetitive bending, reaching, pushing, lifting and transferring using proper/safe body mechanics.
13. Demonstrated computer skills (e.g., email, word processing, etc.).
14. Demonstrated ability and enthusiasm in working with children and their families.
15. Demonstrated ability to contribute to a positive work environment.
16. Must be able to obtain a valid Vulnerable Sector Screen (VSS)
Developmental Pediatrics and Rehabilitation (DPR) is a portfolio within McMaster Children's Hospital. It is comprised of many different programs providing out- patient services to children (and some adults) with developmental, emotional or behaviourial, physical, or communication needs. DPR provides habilitation/ rehabilitation services to children with neurological and/or developmental disabilities from birth to school leaving age. The team offers assessment, treatment, and consultation services through a variety of service delivery models.

The Therapeutic Recreationist works primarily with the Developmental Pediatrics and Rehabilitation program. As a member of the health care team, the Therapeutic Recreationist uses specialized skills to maximize participation and independence and maintain the highest quality of life possible for patients. This process will be achieved through program development and capacity building with community partners, treatment planning, implementation, and evaluation.
Understanding of effective strategies working with the outpatient pediatric population as well as volunteers is key.
Monday to Friday, evenings and weekends required.
This position is temporary until December 2026.
