Job Description

AECOM Edmonton is hiring a Utilities Lead – Transportation on our Municipal Infrastructure and Transportation Design Team.

Are you an experienced utilities professional with a passion for delivering impactful infrastructure projects? AECOM is seeking a Utilities Lead to oversee utility design and coordination for major transportation and municipal projects across Alberta.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

Operate with a high degree of autonomy, receiving broad strategic direction and setting goals aligned with project and client priorities.

Lead multidisciplinary utility coordination and design activities for roadway, LRT, and municipal infrastructure projects.

Serve as the primary liaison with municipalities, provincial agencies, and utility owners to manage relocations, conflicts, and permitting.

Oversee the preparation of utility relocation drawings, cost estimates, and construction support documentation.

Provide technical guidance to project teams in identifying and resolving complex utility conflicts during design and construction.

Support project managers with scope, schedule, budget control, and risk management for all utility-related components.

Communicate effectively with clients, consultants, and stakeholders to ensure collaborative and proactive coordination.

Assign, direct, and review work completed by technical staff to ensure quality and compliance with project and industry standards.

Lead the development of utility strategies and design deliverables for multi-disciplinary transportation projects.

Participate in business development and proposal preparation, including responses to RFPs and RFQs.

Mentor junior and intermediate engineers and designers, supporting their technical and professional growth.

Ensure projects adhere to AECOM's quality management, safety, and risk mitigation standards.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in utility coordination, relocation, or design for transportation or municipal projects.
  • Solid understanding of Alberta Transportation and municipal utility coordination processes and standards.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring and leading technical staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of progressive experience managing utility coordination and design for transportation, municipal, or LRT projects in Alberta.
  • P.Eng. designation in Alberta or ability to obtain within 12 months.
  • Experience delivering projects for Alberta Transportation, Calgary Transit, or Edmonton Transit Service.
  • PMP certification (or equivalent project management credential).
  • In-depth knowledge of applicable design standards, including TAC, Alberta Transportation, and municipal engineering standards.
  • Familiarity with utility owner standards and permitting requirements (ATCO, EPCOR, TELUS, Shaw, etc.).
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD (and Civil 3D), MicroStation, or Bentley design software.
  • Excellent communication, report writing, and proposal preparation skills.
  • Proven leadership in project delivery, client management, and stakeholder coordination.
  • Strong accountability for quality, budget, and schedule performance.
