The Opportunity

As a part of the Resource Staff Team, the Canoe & Kayak Director will lead the Canoe & Kayak program, ensuring a safe, fun, and educational experience for all Camp Glenburn participants. The role includes overseeing a CIT canoe training program, managing the safety of the waterfront, and ensuring the care, storage, and inventory of all equipment. The Director will also contribute to staff training and emergency procedures, while serving as a positive role model for all staff and campers.

Responsibilities

• Plan and instruct the CIT canoe training program, ensuring all participants receive Paddle Canada Certification by the end of the summer.
• Oversee the safety of all waterfront activities, supervising lifeguards, and coordinating with the Waterfront Director to create schedules for lifeguards and duty staff.
• Lead canoe and kayak instruction for Interest Groups, ensuring an engaging and safe learning environment.
• Manage the care, safety, and storage of all canoe and kayak equipment, as well as ensure proper inventory levels.
• Develop and implement camp-wide emergency procedures related to waterfront activities.
• Contribute to the planning and implementation of staff training programs.
• Serve as a positive role model for staff, CITs, and campers, reflecting the YMCA's values in behavior, communication, and relations.
• Assist in other Camp operations as requested by the Camp Director.
• Submit a final report on program outcomes and recommendations to the Camp Director.
• Comply with Child Protection Practices and ensure every child is treated with respect, understanding, and compassion.

Skills and Qualifications

• Ongoing or completed Bachelor's Degree, Community College diploma, or similar from an accredited institution.
• Previous experience in a Camp or Youth Program setting.
• Paddle Canada Certification (required).
• Additional certifications such as NLS, Waterfront, or Pleasure Craft Operator are considered an asset.
• Flexibility regarding working hours and site locations.
• Strong organizational skills and a solid work ethic.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Current First Aid/CPR certification.

• A commitment to living on-site at Camp Glenburn from June to September.

• Employment is contingent on clean Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search and Social Development Clearance Check.
