Position Summary

The primary responsibility of this position is providing leadership in the mobilization, operation, and demobilization of Mobile Retardant Bases (MRB's) in assigned regions of Canada. Additional tasks can include working on an Air Tanker Base (ATB), a Forward Attack Tanker Base (FATB), and Ground Applied Retardant Unit (GARU) along with providing technical & mechanical assistance. The MRB Lead also works closely with and assists the MRB Supervisor in the training and direction of seasonal MRB Technicians (MRB Tech's) as required throughout the fire season.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in annual spring MRB training, preparation, and certification activities.
  • Provide operational support to MRB personnel during periods of high fire activity.
  • Ensure all MRB staff adhere to Safe Work Procedures (SWPs) and company safety standards.
  • Collaborate with team members to improve safety practices, operational procedures, and equipment performance.
  • Respond promptly to early morning or late-night callouts (cell phone provided).
  • Expect extended travel and work hours, including after-hours on-call duties, during the fire season.
  • Assist the Inventory Control Coordinator with inventory maintenance, storeroom organization, and shipping and receiving of parts as needed.
  • Generate work orders and requisitions in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system in compliance with company guidelines.
  • Work closely with the Tanks Supervisor to coordinate shared employee resources.
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of documentation, including timesheets, trip reports, MRB inspections, travel expenses, and logbooks.
  • Manage MRB operations within the assigned region, primarily Western Canada.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with customers for mobile base operations within the assigned area.
  • Oversee equipment maintenance, product quality control, and training for personnel under your supervision.
  • Provide mechanical and technical support to other regions as required.
  • Attend and actively participate in annual winter training and field service events.

Requirements:

Requirements

  • Valid class 5 driver's license or equivalent
  • Class 1 or 3 driver's license with air brake endorsement is an asset
  • Strong mechanical background or aptitude
  • Computer skills required
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment

Working Environment & Physical Demands

Travelling to an MRB site can take several hours, but upon arrival, the physical demand changes to hours of physical activity. Setting up the site can be a physically challenging task due to the variability of terrain in our coverage region, and the summer heat of fire season. Moving rolls of lay flat hose and pumps into position are common tasks that are required, as is connecting 3" & 4" hose in less-than-ideal conditions. There typically aren't any extreme physical demands in this position, but there is a real need to be ready for periods of continuous physical activity.
