About the Organization
The human microbiome has been linked to numerous human diseases and conditions. The human microbiome can be analyzed by various sequencing approaches to profile the hundreds of species found in and on various body sites. Our research focuses on studying these microbiomes with a particular focus on the computational methods used to analyze the sequencing data generated from several collaborative studies.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Research Associate will lead the analysis of microbiome data for several ongoing projects. In addition, this position will be comparing and assessing existing bioinformatic microbiome methods and at times generating novel methods. Lastly, this position will aid in general bioinformatic training of undergraduate and graduate students within our research lab and abroad in workshops
Key Responsibilities
- Support collaborative microbiome research projects, working closely with team members and partners.
- Meet with collaborators to share ideas and provide feedback on research plans and approaches.
- Run bioinformatic analyses on microbiome data and assist in improving analysis workflows.
- Review current bioinformatic methods, compare options, and help implement better solutions.
- Provide training and guidance through tutorials, presentations, and one-on-one support for bioinformatics tools.
- Assist with writing and editing scientific papers, contributing data analysis and technical input.
Note
The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work from within Nova Scotia) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.
Required Qualifications
- PhD with at least five years' research experience in microbiome analyses.
- General microbiome experience including sample collection, extraction, and library preparation from samples in multiple environments beyond just humans.
- Must have publications demonstrating the ability to assess and develop microbiome bioinformatic methods.
- Previous experience in the training of others in microbiome bioinformatic methods in a formal setting including experience with cloud-based computing.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
