In 2019, the Dze L k'ant Friendship Centre Society incorporated the Dze L K'ant housing society to own and operate culturally safe Indigenous housing in the communities we serve. The Dze L K'ant Housing Society's goal is to ensure urban Indigenous people can afford to live safely in our communities. We aim to create a sense of belonging, cultural safety and vibrancy. Our housing projects will be places where our tenants are supported to live holistically healthy lives.

Summary

The Housing Program Manager is responsible for the overall management of Dze L K'ant's housing program. This position ensures the effective delivery of safe, culturally appropriate, and affordable housing for Indigenous community members at the Dze L K'ant Housing Society's Ken'ulh K'it Yikh building at 1611 Main Street Smithers. The Housing Program Manager, reporting to the Executive Director, will oversee day-to-day operations of the building, maintain compliance with all regulatory and funder requirements. This position will work closely and collaborate regularly with the Executive Director, Finance Department and Housing Team members including our Tenant Support worker and Building and Maintenance Manager to foster a positive environment for all tenants and ensure successful operations of the building. This position's schedule is Monday to Friday, 8.30am -4.30pm while also requiring flexibility, including availability for on-call duties as needed.

Responsibilities

We are seeking an individual dedicated to fostering cultural safety within our buildings with demonstrated housing management experience, understanding of Indigenous housing needs and a willingness to learn and grow with our organization.

Qualifications

Preferred Experience and Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in building management or property management, preferably within social housing or Indigenous housing contexts

  • Understanding of the Residential Tenancy Act (RTA) and its application

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the unique housing needs and challenges facing Indigenous peoples in our communities

  • Strong awareness of Indigenous cultural safety principles and trauma-informed practices
    • Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License and access to a vehicle

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills

  • Strong leadership abilities with experience in staff supervision and team development

  • Ability to work flexible hours and be available for on-call duties as required

  • Successfully complete and maintain a Criminal Record Check as required

  • Willingness to learn and grow with our organization.

Staff Management and Leadership

  • Assist leadership with recruitment, onboarding, training, and retention of housing program staff and contractors

  • Assist leadership with coaching, professional development planning, and conduct regular staff performance evaluations

  • Assist leadership in the daily supervision of staff and independent contractors, ensure adequate shift coverage

  • Assist leadership to ensure compliance with all collective agreements and organizational policies and procedures

  • Assist leadership to address workplace conduct and performance issues through appropriate corrective actions,

  • Maintain and oversee the occupational health and safety program, ensuring staff training and compliance with all regulatory requirements and best practices

Financial and Administrative Management

  • Assist and collaborate with the Finance Team to oversee monthly rent collection processes and coordinate with finance departments regarding accounts and budgets

  • Assist with finance team to monitor program budgets and ensure fiscal responsibility for housing

Resident Relations and Community Partnerships

  • Create and cultivate positive relations with both tenants and community partners

  • Respond promptly and appropriately to resident concerns, complaints, and requests

  • Educate and communicate with residents regarding building policies, procedures, and tenancy rights and responsibilities

  • Facilitate effective communication among staff, residents, volunteers, community agencies, and service providers

  • Coordinate with partner organizations to support residents' access to housing, healthcare, social services, financial assistance, and employment opportunities

Emergency Response and Safety

  • Lead coordinated responses to crisis situations and immediately notify senior management of critical incidents

  • Development and implementation of fire safety, building safety, and emergency preparedness plans

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $40.00-$45.00 per hour

Expected hours: 35 per week
