The District of Sparwood has an excellent employment opportunity for an enthusiastic, highly motivated aquatics professional to join the Leisure Services team in the role of Lifeguard/Instructor II:
Core job duties include:
- Ensures the safety of pool users in accordance with established safety guidelines
- Performs lifesaving duties including first aid, resuscitation and other emergency revival techniques as required
- Instructs pool users of various ages in proper water safety
- Swimming and lifesaving techniques, test and certifies, as qualified, to various levels of established national swimming/lifesaving standards
- Leads aqua-fit, lifesaving and other aquatic programs
- Responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and janitorial duties relating to the pool and surrounding areas such as deck, changing rooms, water chemical and filtration systems, etc.
Qualifications and Certifications:
- National Lifeguard Certification- Required
- Lifesaving Swim instructor – Required
- Standard first Aid with CPR C/AED (intermediate) - Required
- AMOA -Airway Management & Oxygen Administration – Preferred
- Recognized fitness knowledge certification and/or Aquafit Instructor- Preferred
- Pool Operator Level I- Preferred
- Life Saving Instructor- Preferred
Salary: This position is a unionized position under CUPE local 2698. The hourly wage rate is $30.99/hour (plus an additional $2.00/hour in lieu of benefits and premiums + vacation pay) pursuant to the current Collective Agreement and Employment Standards Act.

Job Summary
Reporting to the Aquatic Supervisor, the Lifeguard/Instructor II is responsible for the safe supervision of the public in the aquatic center. The incumbent supervises and ensures the safety of pool users in accordance with established safety guidelines, performs lifesaving duties including first aid, resuscitation and other emergency revival techniques as required. The Lifeguard/Instructor II instructs pool users of various ages in proper water safety, swimming and lifesaving techniques, test and certifies as qualified to various levels of established national swimming/lifesaving standards; leads aqua-fit, lifesaving and other aquatic programs. Job Duties
- Monitors aquatic activities, educates patrons, and ensures adherence and enforcement of pool rules and safety regulations
- Supervises and ensures the safety of pool users in accordance with established safety and health guidelines
- Instructs, tests and certifies or assists in the instruction, testing and certification of Red Cross, Lifesaving and other aquatic programs as assigned
- Conducts water tests, balances water and makes appropriate adjustments as required
- Performs basic maintenance tasks related to the pool, filtration plant and related equipment
- Inspects pool and aquatic center facilities such as change rooms, lockers, etc.; provides custodial/cleaning and minor maintenance service and ensures safety, hygiene and cleanliness standards are maintained
- Prepares and/or assists in the preparation of certificates, records, reports, etc. as required or assigned
- Provides information to and assists the public with facility & program information; promotes and practices good public relations with user groups, fellow employees and the general public
- Provides coverage for office staff as needed or assigned
- Acts as the Lead Lifeguard on duty as assigned
- Plans, organizes, and leads events and instructional classes as assigned
- Performs other duties as assigned.
