Mission for this Position

Reporting to the Health, Safety & Security Superintendent, the Emergency Response Trainer is accountable to provide technical and supervisory leadership to the Emergency Response program in accordance with the Nunavut Mines Health and Safety Act and any applicable Industry guidelines and best practices. The Trainer works with the existing Mine Rescue team members, ensuring the training guidelines are followed and the team and equipment are prepared to respond to all types of emergencies.



Main Accountabilities

  • Provide leadership to a volunteer emergency response team by providing coaching, mentoring, and onsite training to enable the team to respond to fire, medical, rescue, environmental, marine and other emergencies that can occur at a remote mining facility
  • Respond to incidents by acting as Incident Commander to lead the team in following response measures, and to control the site. Perform rescue operations such as Surface Mine Rescue and emergency response; Confined Space Rescue; Personnel extraction; Vehicle and Equipment Incidents; Firefighting; High Angle/Rope rescue; SCBA use; Hazmat response; Land based spill response; Water and marine based spill response; Aircraft accidents; Search and Rescue for missing persons.  Provide technical expertise in risk assessments and emergency response procedure development. Ensure robust monitoring systems are in place and reviews are undertaken periodically related to fire safety and emergency response (weekly, monthly and annually)
  • Conduct the annual fire safety risk assessment in accordance with the Nunavut Mines Health and Safety Act and any applicable Industry guidelines and best practices.
  • Participate in incident investigations involving surface mine rescue and emergency response by performing duties such as freezing the scene, collecting evidence, giving statements, acting as a SME, and leading the investigation
  • Participate in the development, execution and debrief of spill response and emergency scenario exercises and conduct readiness drills for camp evacuations. Provide training, prepare the response gear and equipment, participate and lead in the spill response, and conduct debriefing
  • Assist with permitting programs by assessing shops according to criteria and issuing hot work permits, and inspecting and testing valves and other equipment for firewater testing
  • Coordinate the Emergency Response Program by ensuring equipment and materials are maintained and in proper working order. Clean, inspect and repair equipment, conduct pre-oping checks, and routinely operate the equipment to ensure it is in working order to respond to a fire, medical emergency, rescue or spill at all times.
  • Develop and maintain a detailed list of emergency response equipment required to execute the response capability.
  • Establish and maintain a specific emergency response risk register and update as scope of work changes
  • Contribute to the identification of program priorities, design and direction and ensure that the emergency response program is implemented in accordance with the Nunavut Mines Health and Safety Act and any applicable Industry guidelines and best practices.

Main Qualifications

  • A Minimum of 3-5 years of Emergency Response related experience in the construction/mining industry
  • Experience in  working in a face paced remote setting
  • Diploma from a vocational institution in Firefighting
  • Certificate in NFPA 1001 is an asset
  • Certificate in First Aid Instructor training is an asset
  • Certificate in Fit Testing High Angle/Slope Rescue training
  • Certificate in Nunavut Mine Rescue training
  • Certificate in fire extinguisher training
  • Certificate in Gas monitoring
  • Certificate in WSCC supervisor training
