The Transportation Technician initiative at the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is a training program providing classroom and on-the-job experience where you will help build and improve Ontario's transportation infrastructure.
We offer formal and informal learning and developmental opportunities, including rotational assignments to gain experience in a variety of areas such as highway construction, design, maintenance, traffic and geomatics.

NOTE:
- Depending on work assignment, work hours may occur outside of normal business hours, during nights and on weekends.
- This position requires regular independent travel within a region, to various job sites, and potentially across the province..
- Work-related travel expenses, and if required, assignment specific relocation costs and temporary living expenditures will be covered by the Ministry of Transportation for the duration of the rotational assignment and in accordance with the Ontario Public Service's Travel, Meal and Hospitality Expenses Directive.

What you bring to the teamMandatory:
- The positions require the successful candidates to have a valid driver's licence or equivalent as recognized by the province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidates providing proof that they have a valid Ontario class G driver's licence upon being hired.
You have:
- knowledge of highway engineering design, maintenance and contract administration (normally acquired through a diploma in civil engineering technology or related experience)
- math skills to complete calculations in engineering survey, design and estimating quantities
- computer skills, including AutoCAD to prepare computerized designs, and plans, and statistics and word-processing/spreadsheet software to produce a variety of correspondence, reports and presentations
You have:
- demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills to assess data, clarify data integrity, identify design/construction problems, analyze traffic capacity and collision statistics and recommend solutions/modifications, as required
You have:
- excellent oral and written communication skills to explain ministry standards/design requirements to other technical areas and contract administrators, and to discuss maintenance problems and emergency road situations
- interpersonal skills to work with other project members in a team environment
