Position Summary

Western Drilling Tools Inc. is seeking highly skilled and motivated Machinists to join our shop. We are hiring for multiple, separate positions, including CNC Lathe Machinist/Programmers, CNC Milling Machinists/Programmers, and a Manual Lathe Machinist. These are hands-on shop roles focused on producing high-quality precision components. We're looking for individuals who take pride in their work, can read drawings, run machines safely, and contribute positively to the shop.

CNC Lathe Machinist / Programmer Responsibilities:

  • Program CNC lathe parts using IGF, G-code, or MasterCam, ensuring efficient and accurate tool paths.
  • Interpret engineering drawings and 3D models to determine machining strategies and setup requirements.
  • Set up and operate Okuma CNC lathes, selecting appropriate tooling, feeds, and speeds for each job.
  • Inspect machined parts using precision measuring tools (e.g., micrometres, vernier callipers) to ensure adherence to tight tolerances and drawing specifications.
  • Deburr and clean finished parts.
  • Troubleshoot and optimize machining processes, adjusting programs and setups as needed to improve efficiency and part quality.
  • Work collaboratively with machinists, production leads, and managers to enhance throughput, reduce downtime, and maintain a safe and organized work environment.
  • Maintain documentation for programs, setups, and tooling for repeatable and consistent part production.
  • Follow all safety protocols, quality standards, and production policies.

CNC Milling Machinist / Programmer Responsibilities:

  • Program, set up, and operate CNC milling machines to produce precision parts to specification
  • Review and interpret technical drawings and solid models to determine machining strategies, tooling, and setups
  • Set up and operate 3, 4, and/or 5-axis CNC milling machines as required
  • Optimize programs and machining processes to improve efficiency, cycle time, and part quality
  • Select appropriate tooling, fixtures, feeds, and speeds
  • Inspect machined parts using precision measuring tools to ensure tolerances and specifications are met
  • Complete inspection and production documentation accurately
  • Perform routine machine maintenance and keep work areas clean and organized
  • Work closely with CNC leads, production managers, and other machinists
  • Follow all safety protocols, quality standards, and production policies

Manual Lathe Machinist Responsibilities:

  • Set up and operate manual lathes to produce precision parts to specification.
  • Read, interpret, and follow technical drawings and blueprints.
  • Accurately cut tapered threads and other custom machining requirements.
  • Inspect finished parts using precision measuring tools to ensure adherence to quality standards.
  • Maintain machines through routine maintenance and cleaning.
  • Maintain accurate inspection and production records.
  • Work collaboratively with machinists, production leads, and managers to enhance throughput, reduce downtime, and maintain a safe and organized work environment.
  • Follow all safety protocols, quality standards, and production policies.

Education & Experience:

The qualifications listed below apply to the specific position being filled.

CNC Lathe Machinist / Programmer (Afternoon Shift):

  • 2–5 years of CNC lathe machining experience
  • Strong CNC programming and setup experience required
  • Proven experience with Okuma lathes and IGF control systems
  • Solid working knowledge of G-code editing, tooling selection, and feed/speed optimization
  • Proficient with precision measuring instruments (micrometres, vernier callipers, dial indicators, gauges)
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, solid models, and manufacturing documentation

CNC Milling Machinist / Programmer (Afternoon Shift):

  • Minimum 4 years of CNC milling experience
  • Proven experience setting up, programming, and operating CNC milling machines
  • Experience with 4 and/or 5-axis CNC milling machines is required
  • Experience with Okuma CNC mills preferred; Haas or Milltronics experience considered an asset
  • Experience programming using CAM software; Mastercam preferred
  • Strong ability to read and interpret technical drawings and solid models
  • Proficient with precision measuring instruments
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and able to work effectively in a team environment

Manual Lathe Machinist (Afternoon Shift):

  • 2–5 years of related manual lathe experience (Journeyman certification preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to cut tapered API threads on manual lathes
  • Proficient with precision measuring instruments
  • Strong mathematical skills (fractions and basic trigonometry)
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently

Monday – Friday, 2:15 PM – 10:45 PM

CNC Milling Machinist – Afternoon Shift:

Monday – Friday, 2:15 PM – 10:45 PM

Manual Lathe Machinist – Afternoon Shift:

Monday – Friday, 2:15 PM – 10:45PM

Training during probation will be on the day shift.
