About the OpportunityThe City of Penticton's Engineering and Design team is in search of one highly skilled and energetic individual for the temporary (4 months) Civil Engineering Co-op Student position. The Engineering and Design team is responsible for the planning, design and construction of the road, pedestrian and cycling network, water distribution system, waste water collection system and the drainage system.
Reporting to the Design Supervisor, the Civil Engineering Co-op Student assists in preparation of detailed design plans, request for proposals, reports, memos and letters. In addition, the Civil Engineering Co-op Student performs design and layout work, prepares cost and quantity estimates, conducts field inspections, and provides a variety of information and assistance to internal and external contacts. The Civil Engineering Co-op Student also performs various record keeping updates for both digital and paper records.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepares detailed designs and specifications for capital work tenders and other projects.
- Prepares research, technical studies, reports and presentations on topics of moderate complexity, including undertaking relevant field observations and notes and verifying accuracy of the content.
- Conducts technical surveys related to municipal projects and/or utility installations.
- Prepares and maintains engineering drawings, as-built drawings and a variety of reports, records, manuals, and other material related to the work.
- Prepares and maintains utility infrastructure mapping and maintenance records.
- Assists the GIS technician with the operation and maintenance of the GIS.
- Maintains a library of technical reports.
- Responds to public enquiries about transportation policies and projects.
- Supplies technical information to City crews, Contractors and the Public.
- Performs general administrative duties including data entry, record keeping, taking meeting minutes.
Required Knowledge, Abilities & Skills:
- Strong skills with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills including confidently interacting with the public through phone, email and in person.
Required Education, Training & Experience:
- Completed first year of a Civil Engineering Degree Program or Engineering Technologist Diploma Program.
- Experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D (additionally ESRI ArcMap would be an asset).
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License; Class N is acceptable.
Compensation based on skills and experience is an hourly rate of $ $ months, 35 hours per week, CUPE), along with a host of excellent benefits including:
