Come work with us
At the City of Leduc, we're building a community for the future — one that is vibrant, sustainable, and ready to grow. Every project we take on reflects our commitment to thoughtful planning, collaboration, and leadership that puts people first. We're looking for a seasoned professional who shares that vision and is ready to help lead one of the most significant projects that will lead to the City's success. If you're driven by purpose and thrive on shaping meaningful, lasting impact through bold ideas and strategic leadership — this is where you can leave your mark.
What is the Opportunity?
The City of Leduc is seeking a Senior Planner, Strategic Projects — a pivotal role that will lead the City's annexation initiative and other transformative projects shaping Leduc's long-term growth.
This is a rare opportunity to help define how our community expands and evolves. The successful candidate will bring a blend of technical planning expertise, political acumen, and negotiation skill to guide complex, high-profile initiatives with lasting impact. As part of the Planning and Economic Development team, you'll operate at the intersection of policy, strategy, and collaboration — working with senior leaders, Council, and external partners to advance projects that will shape our region for generations.
This position is ideal for an experienced planner who thrives in environments that demand diplomacy, vision, and precision. You'll play a visible, influential role in one of Alberta's most dynamic municipalities — helping us manage growth responsibly while maintaining the character and livability that define Leduc.
What will you do?
As our Senior Planner, Strategic Projects, you'll be the driving force behind complex, city-shaping initiatives that demand vision, diplomacy, and precision. You'll bridge the gap between big-picture strategy and on-the-ground execution — ensuring every milestone brings us closer to a more connected, sustainable, and resilient Leduc. You will:
- Lead the Annexation Process — Manage all aspects of the annexation of Leduc County lands, ensuring full compliance with provincial legislation while aligning outcomes with Council's strategic direction.
- Guide Strategic Projects — Lead projects that include multi-disciplinary teams of staff and consultants on high-priority initiatives, managing budgets, timelines, and deliverables to achieve meaningful, measurable results.
- Exercise Political and Strategic Acumen — Navigate sensitive, high-profile negotiations with professionalism and tact with the support of professional mediators and broader project team. Build strong, trust-based relationships with Council, administration, developers, and provincial partners to advance shared goals.
- Drive Intermunicipal Collaboration — Serve as the City's representative in discussions and negotiations with neighbouring municipalities and regional partners, fostering cooperation that supports long-term, sustainable growth.
- Champion Public Engagement and Advocacy — Act as a credible, trusted voice for the City, communicating complex technical and policy matters clearly and confidently to Council, the public, and key stakeholders.
- Deliver Excellence in Planning — Lead the preparation of reports, analyses, and technical studies that inform decision-making and reflect the highest professional standards in urban and regional planning.
Who you are?
You are a confident and strategic professional who combines deep technical expertise with the ability to navigate political and organizational complexity. You bring credibility, integrity, and a calm, solutions-oriented approach to high-stakes situations.
You're able to manage a complex project that includes many different components with independent milestones that form part of the bigger picture goal of moving forward a successful annexation application. Organizational and time management skills are essential as the project maintains a fast pace and so you are empowered to take on the day-to-day decision making for the project.
Your qualifications include:
- A bachelor's degree in Regional or Urban Planning, Geography, Environmental Science, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Membership, or eligibility for membership, with the Canadian Institute of Planners.
- A minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in municipal or regional planning, with demonstrated experience in large-scale, multi-stakeholder projects.
- Proven ability to manage complex projects and budgets, coordinate cross-functional teams, and deliver high-quality results under tight timelines.
- Exceptional political acumen, communication, and negotiation skills — able to engage constructively with diverse stakeholders, from landowners to elected officials.
- Advanced knowledge of municipal legislation, land use planning principles, and growth management strategies.
What we Offer?
At the City of Leduc, we invest in people who invest in our community. We offer more than just competitive compensation — we offer a chance to grow, lead, and contribute to something bigger. Here's what you can expect:
- A rare, legacy-building opportunity to lead a once-in-a-generation project that will shape the city's future
- A supportive and collaborative culture, driven by purpose, innovation, and high-impact results
- This position may be eligible for up to 10% project pay, recognizing the scope and complexity of this strategic initiative
- Comprehensive benefits, including health, dental, and pension plans designed to support your wellbeing
- A commitment to professional development, continuous learning, and leadership growth.
- The satisfaction of seeing your work make a visible difference in a community that values your expertise

- Please include a cover letter outlining how your experience aligns with this role
