Position Summary
Job Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Hours of Work:  40 hours a week. Monday – Sunday, varied hours including evenings & weekends
Reporting to:      Recreation Manager
Department:      Community Services

People like you Our Recreation department is currently seeking a motivated individual who is passionate about working with their community to join the team as Recreation Leader for youth 10-18 years of age. 

Key Responsibilities
Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Tla'amin laws, regulations, policies, practices and procedures as directed by the Recreation Manager. Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to Citizens, clients, employees and general matters of the Nation. 

Responsibilities include:

•    Prepares and leads Pre-teen & youth programming and initiatives for ages 10 – 18 years, including but not limited to School's Out Leadership Program, and Youth Nights Drop-in. 

•    Provides a culturally safe and secure environment for youth to interact with their peers and participate in programming.

•    Builds & maintains effective relationships with youth and other community contacts.

•    Assists the Youth Recreation Coordinator with scheduling indoor and outdoor supervised activities.

•    Resolves conflicts and situations involving program participants.

•    Engages interest and participation in program activities & events for youth. 

•    Provides high quality customer service.

•    Enforces departmental policies and procedures while ensuring required standards of behavior, safety and security are maintained.

•    Assists with the creation of print & digital media promotional information for programs & services. 

•    Maintains program records and prepares reports related to activities, inventory and funding.

•    Performs related work as required.

Qualifications
Training, Education, Experience

•    Diploma in a Recreation, Social Work or Education program from a recognized post-secondary school.

•    Experience working with an Indigenous community and knowledge of Indigenous perspectives and cultural contexts.

• years experience working with youth in a social-recreational setting, including working with youth impacted by adversity.

•    Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, Access, Publisher, PowerPoint).

•    A valid First Aid Certificate and CPR – Level C are required.

•    Food Safe Level 1.

•    Acceptable Police Information Check (PIC) with Vulnerable Sector Check.

•    Acceptable driving record and valid B.C. Class 4 Driver's License, or Class 5 with willingness and ability to obtain Class 4 within 3 months of hire. 

•    Additional training such as High Five Principles, Physical Literacy training, Behaviour Management training, and National Coaching Certification Program, would be considered assets.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

•    Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment that involves high levels of direct leadership and engagement, with limited but efficient administrative responsibilities.

•    Strong communication skills and ability to build and maintain working relationships with youth and other community agencies & contacts.

•    Ability to organize and promote programs for youth.

•    Experience working with youth impacted by adversity and youth who identify as part of the 2SLGTBQIA+ community is preferred.

•    Sound knowledge of Tla'amin culture, community, and language an asset.

•    Experience and comfort facilitating groups.

•    Knowledge of youth social interests and of various recreational activities such as games, sports, arts & summer programming.

•    Understanding of the wellness and healing capacities of Indigenous cultural resiliency and resurgence.

•    Knowledge of community youth resources and able to provide referrals to support youth needs & promote overall wellness.

•    Ability to manage conflict in a way that is respectful and ethical.

Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors and outdoors at ʔayištən ʔaye (Cousin's House) or dependent on programming, at other locations in qathet or in the City of Powell River.
