As Estimator, you will be responsible for the calculation of labour, materials, equipment, and service costs required for assigned scopes of work on new shipbuilding or ship repair projects at Davie. 

More specifically, you will:

  • Study the drawings, specifications, work packages, classification standards and regulations associated with assigned work scopes to be estimated.
  • Analyze assigned work scope documentation to understand the requirements for labour, material, equipment, and services to be estimated.
  • Determine the resources (labour, material, equipment and services) required to deliver the assigned work scope in the most cost-effective way as possible.
  • Ensure the basis of estimate for all inputs and calculations, and all norms and standards used, are captured and recorded alongside all estimates.
  • Contact suppliers by phone or e-mail as directed or as required for assigned work scope, to obtain quotations for sub-contract labour, materials, equipment and services.
  • Analyze supplier quotations for assigned work scope to ensure pricing received is complete and terms and conditions, including method of payment, price validity and delivery/lead times are acceptable.
  • Support the analysis of supplier quotations, including the comparison of different equipment or services from different suppliers, taking into account the technical requirements of the associated specifications, method of payment and delivery/lead times, to ensure the best value for money products and services are chosen.
  • Perform analysis and validate historical costs for past projects as directed.
  • Support establishing schedule durations for the assigned work scopes, including obtaining data from previous projects.
  • Identify risks and opportunities, and assess the probabilities and impacts associated with each assigned work scope. Complete the estimates feeding into the costed risk and opportunities register.
  • Engage with internal stakeholders and external subcontractors and vendors to ensure all inputs to assigned work scopes are requested and received on time
  • Support the development of other deliverables associated with assigned scopes of work.
  • Support the development of new build estimating norms.
  • Support the review and improvement of new build estimating processes and tools.

Qualifications

  • Three (3) years or more of estimating experience in ship repair, ship building, major construction and/or engineering programs.
  • A bachelor's degree in an appropriate discipline (mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, naval architecture, etc.) is desirable.
  • A good knowledge of industry standards.
  • Good knowledge of estimating tools and processes.
  • Strong math skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical skills; able to see connections in data and historical trends.
  • Proficient in MS Office including advanced level in using MS Excel.
  • Good priority, time management, organizational and planning skills. 
  • Bilingual (French and English). Proficiency in English is required for this position, as the incumbent will be required to interact with our English-speaking clients, partners, and suppliers;
  • Successfully complete the investigation and security clearance process required by the federal government's Contract Security Program.
