Heavy Equipment Operator

About the job
At
Terrace Group
, we don't just fill equipment seats—we hire for
impact
. If you're exceptional at what you do and align with our values—
I Am Better Than Yesterday, I Have Authority, I Am Honorable, We Are Family
—we want to hear from you.
Role
The
Skid Steer / Loader Operator
is a builder at heart—someone who can take messy, high-pressure winter events and turn them into safe, clean, on-time results for our clients. You've run iron in tough conditions, you communicate clearly, and you make good decisions when it counts.
In this role, you'll own a site—or several—during snow events. You'll arrive with a plan, pressure-test it live with dispatch and your crew, and leave each site better than you found it. You'll also help turn field learnings into repeatable
SOPs, site maps, and training
we can use across our routes.
Here's what you'll actually do
- Execute Terrace snow SOPs to clear, stack, and stage snow on commercial sites—
fast, safe, clean
. - Review pre-event briefs (site maps, trigger depths, priorities) and identify constraints before the storm.
- Lead during live events: coordinate with dispatch, salt/sand teams, and support trucks to keep sites moving.
- Perform
pre-trip inspections
, log defects, and maintain equipment to a high standard. - Document work performed (photos, notes, timesheets) with accuracy and accountability.
- Partner with the team to convert lessons learned into
checklists, playbooks, and better routes
.
You like working with people, solving problems
with
them (not for them), and you take pride in clean passes, sharp edges, and sites that open on time.
Why this role matters (for you)
If you're hungry to
grow
, this is your shot.
You'll see dozens of sites, storm patterns, and operational challenges in one season—your skills compound quickly here. You'll build a strong reputation, learn what actually works in the field, and help good teams become great. If you find meaning in high-accountability, high-impact work, you'll love this role.
If you're not ready for a fast, weather-driven environment, this isn't the role for you—and that's okay.
Responsibilities
- Own the outcome for assigned sites:
safe, on-time, zero excuses
. - Identify constraints quickly (traffic, drifting, parked vehicles) and propose tactical fixes.
- Operate skid steers/loaders with blades, and buckets; stack efficiently and safely.
- Apply sand/salt per spec; track materials accurately.
- Communicate clearly on radio/app; escalate issues early.
- Maintain professional client relationships on-site; represent Terrace standards at all times.
- Contribute to continuous improvement: routes, staging, equipment setup, and SOPs.
Results
- Deliver
clean, passable sites
within service windows (meet/exceed contract SLAs). - Maintain
zero preventable incidents
and a strong safety record. - Hit documentation standards: accurate timesheets, photo logs, equipment checks.
- Earn strong client feedback and internal QA scores.
- Uphold Terrace values in every interaction.
Requirements
- Proven experience operating
skid steers and/or wheel loaders
(winter operations preferred). - Valid
driver's license
and reliable transportation; able to provide a current
Driver's Abstract
. - Comfort with
overnights, early mornings, weekends, and on-call
during storms. - Strong situational awareness, communication, and decision-making under pressure.
- Physically able to work outdoors in cold weather and handle occasional manual tasks.
- Nice to have:
loader ticket/certifications, box pusher/sectional blade experience, WHMIS & harassment training (we can provide).
Storm Schedule Expectations
Storm weeks are intentionally
high-intensity
to protect our clients' operations. During these periods, availability commonly spans
12-hour windows
(e.g., 6:00 PM–6:00 AM or 2:00 AM–2:00 PM), with additional time for staging, refueling, and post-event cleanup. This pace isn't for everyone—we set it clearly so those who
thrive in high-accountability environments
choose to be here.
Compensation
Competitive hourly pay
based on experience and equipment operated, plus:
- Event premiums / standby pay
during storm windows - Opportunities for
extended hours
and
year-round work
(landscape/excavation) for top performers - Health Benefits (dental, vision, medical)
- Overtime Pay
Benefits
- In-house training & certification
(written, practical, supervisor evaluation) - Clear
growth paths
(Lead Operator → Crew Lead) - Supportive,
family-values
culture with mentorship and ongoing development - PPE allowance and
NEW
, well-maintained equipment
