PRIMARY PURPOSE: The primary purpose of this position is to ensure that the College of Dentistry's equipment is maintained and repaired to an appropriate level so that ongoing patient treatment and research can take place within the College.
NATURE OF WORK: Reporting to the Maintenance Coordinator, the Maintenance Service Unit Specialist works to ensure that the maintenance services are provided in an efficient and effective manner, requiring understanding and management of conflicting needs and resource allocations. This position requires one to have the capacity to work both independently and in a collaborative team setting, exercise discretionary decision-making, and establish effective working relationships with stakeholders both within and outside the university setting. This is a high-volume position requiring the ability to work with multiple stakeholders, under pressure in a fast-paced environment, and subject to tight deadlines. The Maintenance Service Unit Specialist works in a demanding but collaborative environment, where there is continuous change, shifting priorities, and frequent interruptions. The work requires an ability to successfully balance competing deadlines and multiple tasks. Establishing and maintaining the level of professional relationships that support exceptional collaboration and effective problem-solving is essential for success in this position.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Proactively ensure that the College's dental, research and other equipment is maintained to an appropriate standard by providing general repairs, maintenance and installation. Communicate daily what repairs have been completed
- Participate in the administration of contracts with external organizations for equipment maintenance and repair as required
- Actively participate in and contribute to strategies to improve overall maintenance service of College equipment
- Communicate daily about the status of the work completed or delayed due to parts
- Conducting regular preventative maintenance on college equipment at appropriately scheduled intervals
- Maintain a log/records of all College equipment maintenance and repairs
- Maintain a register of all College equipment
- Other duties as appropriate and assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Completion of Grade 12 plus advanced training or experience working with electronics and electrical components.
Experience: Experience in maintenance, caretaking, electrical work, or working under supervision of skilled tradesmen will be considered an asset.
Skills: A demonstrated mechanical aptitude is essential to success in the position, as are interpersonal skills and the ability to interact positively with administrators, co-workers, and customers. Time management skill, self-motivation, and initiative are required. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required. Demonstrated ability to use design and fabrication equipment such as metal lathes and milling machines is required. Experience with circuit board design, manufacturing, and assembly is desirable, as is experience with pneumatics, robotics, hydraulics, process control systems, and microcontroller circuits. The ability to perform heavy physical labor is also necessary.
