NAIT's Building Automation Systems Technology (BAST) diploma program prepares students for dynamic careers designing, installing, commissioning, maintaining, and optimizing intelligent building control systems. With a focus on HVAC integration, energy management, and building automation networks, the BAS program develops forward-thinking professionals ready to support smart building infrastructure in residential, commercial, and institutional settings.
We are currently recruiting for a subject matter expert who will bring technical expertise, leadership, and enthusiasm to our growing Building Automation Systems Technology team. The successful candidate will bring their strong background in HVAC systems, building control
technologies, playing a key role in developing program curriculum for the building automation industry. This role blends technical expertise with instructional design best practices to deliver training that is practical, scalable, and impactful.
We are seeking an energetic leader who is passionate about student success and committed to innovation in polytechnic education.
KeyResponsibilities:
- Collaborate with learning designers to analyze training needs and define learning objectives.
- Design and develop instructional materials, including learning modules, instructor-led training, presentations, and technical documentation.
- Translate complex BAS concepts (HVAC controls, lighting systems, energy management, IoT integration, etc.) into clear, learner-friendly content.
- Incorporate adult learning principles, interactive design, and assessment strategies to maximize knowledge retention.
- Leverage authoring tools (e.g., Articulate 360, Captivate, Camtasia) and LMS platforms to deliver training.
- Continuously evaluate training effectiveness and update content to reflect evolving technologies and standards.
- Utilize appropriate educational technology for presentations, communications
- Maintenance and/or submission of program records accurately and promptly
- Maintain professional and ethical relationships with students, colleagues, and industry partners
- Maintain accurate project timelines, milestones, and project deliverables.
Skills & Abilities:
- Possess strong technical knowledge of building automation and HVAC systems, control strategies, automation networks.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with learning designers and the building automation program team.
- Enthusiasm, industry insight, and instructional creativity to support program growth and team culture.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered where formal education aligns with recognized industry certifications (e.g., BAS programming credentials, energy auditing certifications, or control systems training)
- Minimum 5 years of recent, relevant industry experience in building automation, HVAC controls, or energy systems
- Experience with building automation platforms such as BACnet, LON, Modbus, or proprietary control systems
- Teaching or instructional experience at the post-secondary or industry level is a strong asset
Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services (WES), International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) or the Comparative Education Services (CES).
Remuneration $49/ Scheduled Instruction Hour. (Classification – Instructor Casual Credit).
All casual instructor assignments are covered by the NAIT Academic Staff Association (NASA) Collective Agreement
