We are currently looking for an Inspector, Fuels in the Durham Region and surrounding areas. Preference will be given to those who currently reside or are willing to relocate within this region. 

Position Summary:

Inspector employees are represented by the Ontario Public Service Employee Union - OPSEU/SEFPO, Local 546. As Inspector, you will enhance public safety and improve service delivery to customers by applying expert knowledge of the natural gas, propane, fuel oil and petroleum industry to inspect and audit fuel facilities and services governed by the Technical Standards and Safety Act and related regulations. Our Inspector also investigates industrial, commercial, and domestic gaseous/ liquid fuel incidents, and public complaints relating to potentially unsafe operating conditions.

We are looking for an individual with a strong ability to communicate, one who can present in a concise, clear, and articulate manner. You will need the ability to quickly adapt to change and realign with business priorities. You should have the disposition to follow scientific methods in order to determine root cause of incidents.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Enhance public safety by attending and inspecting scenes of incidents such as fires, explosions, carbon Monoxide exposure, public complaints relating to program inspection services for fuel oil, natural gas, propane, and petroleum sectors to determine root causes.
  • Identify appropriate action to prevent re-occurrence including issuance of legal orders
  • Ensure a positive image of the company and maintain effective relationships by providing timely information to customers (including interpretation/application of TSSA's Act, Regulations, codes, and standards).
  • Prepare and submit accurate reports within established timeframes; and maintain current electronic and paper records.
  • Contribute to a workplace environment conducive to a high performing team by maintaining positive professional relationships with all members of the TSSA team; share expertise and best-practices; participate in the training and development of others; and provide back-up for colleagues.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to health and safety by working in accordance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and TSSA health and safety procedures, and when on site, customers' safety procedures, and by identifying and reporting potential and actual risks.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; and participating in professional associations.   

Job Qualifications:

  • Minimum of High School Diploma
  • 3+ years experience in the hydrocarbon fuels industry and a thorough knowledge of the Technical Standards & Safety Act and related Fuels Regulations 210/01, 212/01, 213/01, 215/01, 216/01 and 217/01.
  • A Gas Technician level G2 or an Oil Burner Technician level OBT1/OBT2 is preferred.
  • Liquid Propane (LP) and/or Petroleum Mechanic Certification (PMH/PM2/PH3) and/or Pipeline Inspector Certification (GPI) would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of Codes and Standards and proficiency in the CSA B Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code, CSA B Propane Storage and Handling Code, CSA B Code for the Field Approval of Fuel-Related components on Appliances and Equipment, Liquid Fuel Handling Code and the CSA Z662 - Oil and Gas Pipeline Systems. 
  • Perform Contractor Audit inspections following established Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Background and experience in natural gas/propane pipeline distribution systems are an asset Understanding of ground infrastructure mapping. Determine the root cause of pipeline damages. Reading and interpreting utility infrastructure maps and understanding of locating procedures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the damage prevention procedures as per best practice. 
  • Knowledge and experience in inspections of trenching, knowledge and expertise in reading and understanding schematics and field notes and be familiar with Ontario Regional Common Ground Alliance (ORCGA) methodology and best practices
  • Intermediate computer skills including proficiency with MS Office (Power Point, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • As this position requires daily travel, a valid Ontario driver's license and a clean driving record is required.
