Job Description

As a Electrical Commissioning Engineer, you will lead and manage inspection, testing, and commissioning activities for utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) power generation facilities across Canada and the USA. This role involves overseeing electrical systems including DC, medium-voltage AC, and substations, ensuring compliance with industry standards, utility requirements, and client specifications. You will develop and implement detailed commissioning plans and documentation, coordinate with vendors and utilities, and support engineering teams throughout project execution.

Responsibilities: 

  • Manage and track progress on inspection, testing and commissioning activities for the electrical systems of utility-scale PV generating facilities including DC collector (1500V), AC collector (25-35kV) and substation kV).
  • Develop or review detailed inspection, testing and commissioning plans including specific forms and procedures to ensure a safe and reliable operation of the facility in accordance with industry practice, utility requirements and client specifications.
  • Research, development and refinement of internal inspection, testing and commissioning procedures, methods, and best practices.
  • Communicate regularly with vendors, subcontractors, and technicians to resolve commissioning-related issues and maintain alignment with project goals.
  • Select and procure specialized inspection and testing services and manage vendors throughout execution.
  • Coordination with local utility to ensure interconnection requirements for testing and commissioning are met.
  • Expert reviews and validations of inspection and testing results for key systems and components; document deficiencies and drive resolution of non-conformance items.
  • Conduct onsite reviews, walkthroughs with clients, subcontractors and technicians; travel between multiple active solar projects to support site-specific commissioning schedules as needed.
  • Coordinate with engineering and construction teams to confirm pre-requisites for each inspection/testing have been completed.
  • Collect and manage all inspection, testing and commissioning documentation and create reports, summaries and packages for client submissions.
  • Support design reviews of electrical and SCADA engineering documentation.
  • Support creation of red-lines and as-built packages.
  • Support development of inspection, testing and commissioning budgets, schedules and resource plans.

Requirements:

  • At least 4 years of theoretical and practical experience of commissioning processes, testing protocols, and system integration within the power generation or utility infrastructure industries (solar PV preferred).
  • Good knowledge of testing standards applicable to Canada and USA (e.g. NETA).
  • Experience with utility interconnection process of power plants in Canada and USA.
  • Working knowledge of Canadian and USA electrical codes.
  • Working knowledge of electrical systems and field installation practices, including high-voltage equipment.
  • Ability to review and interpret correctly technical drawings, specifications, and electrical studies for substations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage confidently with field teams, vendors, and engineers.
  • Organized, proactive, and able to manage shifting priorities across multiple sites.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to travel to project sites in Canada and the USA.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering required.
  • Professional Engineering License (P.Eng.) preferred.
