We are looking to fill the role of JR Geneticist that will work both for the Turkey and Layer BUs in Canada, based out of the Kitchener Office (although work will also be required at Layer facilities in the Cambridge area). As this is a split role, it will have dual reporting into Charlie de Hollander, Director R&D Turkeys and Gosse Veninga, Director Product Excellence Layers. The JR Geneticist will assist and work closely with the R&D team and R&D operational facilities, to conduct research and apply genetic principles to our breeding program. In this role you will focus on improving animal productivity, welfare and robustness. This will be done by reviewing, analyzing and interpreting data to drive genetic progress. The JR Geneticist is expected to visualize trends, summarize data, make data driven decisions and help to develop strategies that will enhance our genetic engine.
What are your main tasks and responsibilities?
- Conduct quantitative and qualitative research
- Some hands-on R&D work at our farms that could include data collection, process improvement, etc. (at both layer and turkey facilities in KW/Guelph area)
- Review and analyze data collected at our farms
- Develop visualizations, dashboards and reports to evaluate the success of the breeding program and data quality
- Interpret data and provide actionable insights, recommendations and follow ups
- Contribute and be a member of the global Hendrix-Genetics R&D team
- Help to design and implement breeding strategies to optimize genetic engine of our breeding program
- Other duties and projects as assigned
- MSc or PhD degree in Animal Breeding and Genetics
- Relevant work experience in the field of animal breeding and/or genetic related research is considered an asset
- Knowledge of database systems (e.g. SQL, R) and data visualization (R, Power BI)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
- Proficiency in research tools and software (e.g. R, Python)
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Must have G License and be insurable
