Position: Paid on call Volunteer Firefighter
Salary: In Accordance with schedule
Reports to: Fire Chief
Purpose of Position:
Reporting to the Fire Chief, this position is responsible for Public Education, firefighting, rescue and other related emergency situations.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Successful completion of all prescribed departmental training programs, courses and classification examinations
- Maintain certification appropriate for the level of medical assistance that is to be provided
- Successful completion of the Firefighters Recruit Course
- All new recruits are hired under a minimum 1 year probationary period during which they must complete all training as assigned. Failure to do so may result in termination of employment
- Valid driver's license for the Province of Ontario with appropriate classification for all emergency response vehicles including air brakes endorsement (minimum DZ License) prior to year one anniversary
- Mechanical aptitude
- Able to perform all essential job duties as assigned
- Able to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Familiar with the O.H.S.A.
Knowledge:
- Operation of all apparatus, equipment and methods used in combating, extinguishing and preventing fires and in rescue work
- Extensive knowledge of first aid, CPR, defib, safety practices and necessary actions of first responders to a hazardous material incident, in accordance with Awareness Haz-Mat requirements.
- Legislation, Health and Safety Requirements and Section 21 Committee Guidelines
- Fire Protection and Prevention Act, R.S.O. 1997
- Maintain equipment and departmental facilities
- Skilled in the operation of all firefighting and rescue equipment.
Physical Skill and Effort
- Must be capable of maintaining physical strength and agility to perform hard work and operate all firefighting/rescue apparatus and equipment, as well as safety equipment under adverse conditions, frequently, for prolonged periods of time. May be required to submit to an employment physical.
Major Responsibilities:
- Rapid and efficient performance of various duties in emergency conditions frequently involving considerable hazards.
- Carry out specific orders and directives received from an officer and/or in the absence of an officer a senior FF in the normal course of fire maintenance, training and emergency operations.
- Perform routine duties in the maintenance of fire fighting vehicles, equipment and departmental property, and record and report findings where required.
- Participate, in department's Public Education/Fire Prevention Programs.
- Adhere to and comply with applicable legislative requirements, departmental policies, procedures and guidelines, and Section 21 Committee Health and Safety Guidelines.
- Prepare reports, where required.
- Respond to emergency calls, lay and connect hoses, hold nozzles and direct water streams, raise and climb ladders, use extinguishers and other department equipment.
- Provide rescue in various forms including first responder actions at hazardous materials incidents, in accordance with Awareness Haz-Mat Training.
- Remove persons from danger and administer first aid to injured persons.
- Respond to medical calls and provide Tiered response to the level taught in the Base Hospital First Responder Defibrillator Course, where necessary.
- Ventilate buildings to release heat, smoke, fumes, vapors and gases.
- Carry out overhaul and salvage to ensure extinguishment and prevent further loss from water damage, where possible.
- Operate fire fighting vehicles, equipment and apparatus, as assigned.
- Participate in prescribed training and practices in order to keep current and familiar with FF skills and knowledge including the operation of fire department vehicles, motorized equipment and specialized tools used in fire and rescue operations performed by the department.
- Participate in investigations and any subsequent hearings or prosecutions, where required.
- Participate in inspection of fire apparatus, equipment, station and premises, where required, and report deficiencies to station officer
Decision Making and Judgement:
- In accordance with Section 21 Committee Health and Safety Guidelines, considerable independence of judgment and action in circumstances of extreme urgency must be exercised where referral to a superior officer for instruction is not possible.
Interpersonal Skills:
Interpersonal skills to communicate with the public in a clear and precise manner under demanding and high pressure situations.
Internal
With Station Officer and senior staff to ensure work responsibilities are met.
With other staff to obtain and provide information as necessary.
External
With children, adults and general public.

Environment
- Work under potentially hazardous, physically demanding and mentally stressful conditions
Control over Work Schedule
- While this is a paid on call position there are no guaranteed hours of employment.
- Must participate in scheduled training and maintenance sessions and to respond to emergency calls when paged.
- Availability includes evening and weekend hours. Changes to any regular work schedule with any other employer affecting your availability must be communicated to the Station Chief.

- If planning to move from your original hiring address, you must discuss with senior fire staff before the move date on how/if this move effects your position as a paid on call firefighter
- Any change of electronic contact info (email or phone #) must be immediately provided to fire administration
- Must obtain and maintain while employed a current smart phone for use when paged for emergencies and attending training and hall duties
