Position Summary
Reporting to the Senior Clinical Program Director, the Clinical Educator - Family Birthing Centre at St. Joseph's Health Centre/St. Michael's Hospital , serves as a role model and leader as part of the cross site operational leadership team to support care that optimizes patient outcomes and experiences while enhancing the safety, quality, efficiency, effectiveness and accessibility of care by:
- Planning, implementing and evaluating education for nursing and the inter-professional team working in the Family Birthing Centre,
- Being an agent of positive change and role model that advocates for, and creates learning/education environments that enhance the clinical and professional practice of our team,
- Working with other leaders in the Women and Children's Health Program and beyond, to support the development of staff including participation in nursing and corporate education and other initiatives,
- Collaborating with inter-professional teams and external partners to influence and advance best practices in education and evidence based nursing practice
Responsibilities
The primary role of the Clinical Educator - Family Birthing Centre, is to facilitate a learning environment where evidence-based knowledge is translated via education to optimize the patient's outcomes and experiences. This includes developing and leading educational plans and activities aimed at improving clinical knowledge, skills and competencies and in collaboration with others, supporting the ongoing professional development of unit/program staff.
The Clinical Nurse Educator has 3 main areas of responsibility:
Education
- Education and staff development, particularly in relation to nurses including organizing the Fetal Health Surveillance program
- Assess learning needs and styles of nursing staff
- Design and deliver education that is tailored to specific needs of units/program
- Incorporates evidence, best practices, and relevant research findings
- Incorporates inter-professional core competencies where applicable
- Incorporates best practices in education
- Evaluates the effectiveness of education, revises education and learning activities to support changes
- Provides timely feedback to nursing staff on their learning and application to their practice competence
- Demonstrates Professional Standards and guidelines
Consultation/Collaboration
- Collaborates and participates with Professional Practice to identify and support Corporate nursing initiatives
- Engages members of the intra and interdisciplinary team, management team, Professional Practice and across hospital departments in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating Corporate and other educational initiatives
- Participates in the hospital's network of Clinical Educators - Nursing and works with other Clinical Educator - Nursing colleagues
- Collaborates with the hospital's Student Centre and Clinical Managers to facilitate nursing student placements
- Collaborates with Clinical Managers in interviewing, hiring and evaluation of nursing staff
- Participates in hospital and corporate committees and other groups to represent the Educator perspective and serves as a bridge to the unit/program and Clinical Educator - Nursing Network by disseminating committee information and decisions
Research And Quality Improvement
- Participates in research projects that contribute to nursing and/or interprofessional practice and education pertaining to their unit/program and the Corporation
- Contributes to quality implement initiatives including reviewing Safety and Learning reports and helping to implement recommendations
- Is a conduit for our relationship with BORN and seeks to improve the data collected via this provincially mandated tool
- Supports and participates in the implementation of evidence based practice (best practice guidelines and other forms of evidence) and quality improvement initiatives on unit/in programs including Corporate initiatives.
Qualifications
- Registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario in the General Class
- Master's degree in nursing or education, required
- Current BLS certification required
- Current certification in Fetal Health Surveillance; FHS Instructor preferred.
- Current Neonatal Resuscitation certificate required or obtained within 4 months of hire; NRP Instructor preferred.
- Breastfeeding certificate preferred
- A minimum of 2 years recent experience in a formal adult education role related to neonatal and/or paediatric nursing.
- Membership of clinically relevant professional organizations (ex. CANN, ANN, AWHONN, CAPHC) preferred or willingness to join.
- Minimum of 3-5 of relevant clinical experience. Demonstrated expertise in contemporary family birthing nursing with diverse populations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability and willingness to have difficult, solution focused conversations as required.
- Demonstrated experience in working collaboratively with nurses and interprofessional teams to improve patient care and outcomes, required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based standards of practice for the care the pregnant patient/baby dyad.
- Demonstrated knowledge and evidence of the ability to integrate equity centred, trauma informed, family centred care principles into practice.
- Demonstrated ability to apply adult education principles, develop, implement and evaluate education programs, including but not limited to competency based orientation of staff with varying levels of previous experience.
- Demonstrated skills in the use of research in the practice setting, clinical education planning, consultation and facilitation.
- Strong leadership and communication skills (writing, active listening, conflict resolution, ability to inspire others, delegation, mentoring, coaching, goal setting etc.), required.
- Demonstrated leadership in committee work, education, quality improvement, and knowledge translation initiatives.
- Demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of Unity Health Toronto.
- Must have an excellent attendance record.
