Role & Responsibilities

We are currently seeking an enthusiastic Electrical Engineering Co-op Intern.

The Electrical Engineering Co-op role at EMS-Tech Inc. is a unique opportunity to be part of a global engineering team working on groundbreaking projects in the bulk material handling industry. You'll be working on massive, high-impact machines and conveyor systems, while sharpening your skills in CAD drafting, PLC programming, VFD drives, and advanced electrical design.

This role is perfect for anyone who thrives on solving complex engineering challenges and pushing the limits of what's possible in the dynamic bulk material handling industry, which continues to grow with no signs of slowing down. Here are some of the things you'll be working on:

  • Interpret conceptual designs/calculations prepared by others, and complete analysis, layout and calculation details to satisfy project needs and specifications.
  • Develop your abilities to size/select electrical components such as transformers, switchgear, cables, motor control centers, motors, control components, etc.
  • Develop computer skills using available software for lighting calculations, PLC Programming (various languages), HMI Programming (various languages), and VFD drive parameter setting, field device programming etc. Develop, in parallel, hand calculation methods to verify analysis work.
  • Develop CAD 2-D drafting skills using programs such as E3 Wireworks or AutoCAD. Produce drawings to EMS-Tech Inc. standards and develop an understanding of drawing presentation.
  • Understand fundamentals and develop expertise related to: CEC (Canadian Electric Code) or other recognized standard such as NEC, IEEE, IEC, ABS, Lloyds, DNV, etc.
  • Develop hand calculation methods as primary analysis tools
  • Develop analytical skills using spreadsheet programs such as Excel
  • Prepare and check general arrangement and detail drawings.
  • Develop technical report writing skills for component and equipment inspections.
  • Apply engineering science to daily work.
  • Any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Rising Electrical Engineering Student Entering their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of study
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Outlook
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively across business units and to different levels of management.

  • Interning with our Engineering Department represents a great opportunity to gain work experience in your field of study.
  • Our head office is located at 699 Dundas Street West, Belleville and is easy to reach by car, with free parking provided on-site. The incumbent will be required to work 40 hours a week from Monday to Friday.
  • The internship term is from May to August 2026, which can be extended up to a period 12 months (May 2027) should all parties find the fit to the role well aligned.
