The Hatchery Technician is responsible for applying appropriate farm procedures to day-to-day tasks within the hatchery. This role involves measuring and recording data, including dissolved oxygen levels, other water quality parameters, daily mortalities, and feed amounts. The technician will carry out tasks such as feeding, monitoring tank conditions, mortality retrieval, grading, vaccinating, cleaning and disinfecting equipment, and weight sampling. The Hatchery Technician works collaboratively with all hatchery roles to execute tasks and activities efficiently.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Data Collection and Recording: Measure and record dissolved oxygen levels, water quality parameters, daily mortalities, and feed amounts accurately.
  • Feeding and Monitoring: Feed fish according to established schedules and monitor tank conditions to ensure optimal living environments.
  • Mortality Retrieval: Retrieve and record daily mortalities, ensuring proper disposal and documentation.
  • Grading and Vaccinating: Assist in grading fish by size and health status, and participate in vaccination procedures as needed.
  • Cleaning and Disinfecting: Clean and disinfect equipment and tanks regularly to maintain hygiene and prevent disease.
  • Weight Sampling: Conduct weight sampling to monitor fish growth and health.
  • Collaboration: Work with all hatchery roles to execute tasks and activities, ensuring smooth operations and effective communication.
  • Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on hatchery equipment and report any issues to the supervisor.
  • Compliance: Adhere to all safety and biosecurity protocols to ensure the health and safety of the fish and staff.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in aquaculture or related field is a plus.
  • Previous experience in a hatchery or aquaculture setting preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately record data.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks that may require lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Basic understanding of water quality parameters and fish health management.
  • Good communication skills and ability to follow instructions.
