Camp Description
The NUC Summer Day Camp provides quality, affordable, engaging, and faith-filled children's summer programs for families within the community. We do this by keeping our fees low, providing valuable leadership opportunities for middle and high school students, emphasizing earth-friendly behaviours and practices, and creating a diverse, accessible and inclusive summer camp program.
NUC Summer Camp seeks to create a safe space for all people by encouraging gender inclusive language as well as promoting healthy positive interactions among all staff and campers. During our camp program, we emphasize structured and unstructured play, outdoor time and a variety of activities based on our weekly themes, all using a lens of faith, spirituality and ecological awareness.
Contract Period: February 2 to August 28, 2026 (Camp season runs July 6 - 31, 2026)
Schedule: part-time (5-10 hours/week) from February to mid-June, full time from mid-June to July 31, and part-time in August. Weekends as needed during camp season (the month of July).
Reporting: The Camp Director will be supervised by, and will report to NUC's Summer Camp Team, and is also accountable to the Norval United Church Executive and the congregation.
Duties
- Ensure campers and volunteers have a safe space to learn, grow and be fully and authentically themselves.
- Promote opportunities for volunteers to develop leadership skills and build strong supportive relationships with each other.
- Encourage opportunities to explore and talk about lived faith for campers, volunteers and staff.
- Provide opportunities and accommodations so that each camper's and volunteer's experience is positive and successful, regardless of age or ability.
- Provide support and conflict management for challenging behaviours among campers, staff and volunteers.
- Understand and implement Faithful Footsteps: UCCan duty of care policies, and UCCan camping best practices. Ensure completion, follow up and filing of any incident reports.
- Communicate with parents regularly, including clear communication regarding incidences of concern while at camp
- Respond to all inquiries in a positive and professional manner
- in collaboration with the Summer Camp Team, review applications, interview and select the Camp Leadership Team (3-4 Camp Managers).
- Provide training, support and supervision of Camp Leadership Team, including organizing First Aid training, Food Safety Training and Workplace Safety Training and providing ongoing feedback, including formal and informal evaluation.
- Review applications and interview student volunteer counsellors, providing valuable job preparedness experiences and skills.
- Work with Leadership Team to develop and deliver training and support for volunteers, including Duty of Care and Duty to Report.
- Work with Leadership Team to develop the camp program, making necessary arrangements for special events, guests and other camp-wide initiatives.
- Monitor the use of equipment and supplies, re-stock as needed, supervise set up and safety of camp space.
- Participate in 2 camp-themed worship services; a covenanting service on July 5th, and a camp celebration service on July 26th.
- Manage camp budget, ensure camp fees are collected, and provide families with receipts.
- Oversee and manage the sale of any camp merchandise.
- Update camp registration form, and share the registration form with previous families, and via social media/NUC website. Manage camper registrations and ensure all weeks are filled. Communicate with families regarding registrations. Update website to reflect available camp spots.
- Oversee volunteer scheduling, and manage honorariums and volunteer letters
- Evaluate camper experience by sending follow-up evaluations to parents at the end of each week of camp.
- Monitor and complete reporting for Canada Summer Jobs Grant, and prepare an end of season Camp Report for NUC's Annual Report.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications
- Knowledge and experience with camp programs (program development and management)
- Ability to design, organize and implement a comprehensive camp program, including ability to adapt and accommodate diverse ages, experiences and abilities
- Strong leadership, communication and customer service skills
- Ability to supervise, manage and delegate tasks effectively and supportively
- Post secondary education in a related field
- Valid First Aid certificate and WHMIS training strongly recommended.
- Valid class "G" driver's license and access to own vehicle
- Police Records Check, Vulnerable sector required
Working Conditions:
- Physical activity, involving active movement (i.e., lifting, pulling/pushing, walking)
- Regular exposure to emotionally charged situations, including conflict and challenging behaviours
- Must be able to work after hours during camp season when deemed necessary to provide full support and supervision of staff
- General environment consists of indoor and outdoor space, including off site locations (in walking distance), indoor space is shared with other groups during the week.
