Job Summary
The Dr. Ciernia Laboratory, in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of British Columbia will be looking to hire an Hourly Research Assistant/Technician 2 to join the team.
Organizational Status
The Research Assistant will report directly to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Ciernia.
Work Performed
-
Assist with planning and conducting behavioral experiments with mice.

Assist with Planning and conducting molecular experiments including sectioning and staining mouse brain samples, isolating and analyzing RNA for gene expression and collecting and staining cells for flow cytometry.

Analyzing data and creating graphs.

Taking notes on experiments in our electronic lab notebook system.

Carring out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Failure to maintain a high standard of work with consistent communication between team members and the supervisors will result in delays and quality of research output, which may impact the working conditions, reputation, and funding for the research group and UBC.
Supervision Received
Works under general supervision in carrying out familiar phases of duties and responsibilities; receives instructions during orientation and on subsequent new assignments or changes in procedures.
Supervision Given
May oversee and direct the work of one or two employees at lower classifications in which case they are responsible for the accuracy, production, and control of the work unit.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience with maintaining day-to-day operations in the lab. High degree of motivation, enthusiasm, organization, and initiative. Ability to work independently and with other lab personnel. Effective oral and written communication.
